Experience Regarding Working With All The 4 Groups: 1.HUL Group

Srikant describes his experiences working in four different groups during a university course. The first group on an HUL case came unprepared and struggled to answer questions, but one member provided leadership. In the second GE/J&J group, discussion was productive but some members dominated conversation. The trip planning group considered many options but some spoke without listening. The final washroom project group was very participatory with all members contributing issues and ideas, motivating one another under two leaders. Srikant found this the most engaging group experience.

Experience regarding working with all the 4 groups

1.HUL Group
Our group in HUL case was named as Ice Cream Unit 2. So, we were 4
members and we had to analyse the case situation and problems
associated with it and to act accordingly. Other 3 members were not much
known to me. On that day, when we performed that case as a real life
situation, none of my group members came prepared with the case
including me. We were assigned some questions that we had to answer.
So, we proceeded further by planning to go question by question
analysing the case page by page quickly as we came unprepared with the
case. Also while performing under the group, the inputs were very low as
we were only 4 members. Therefore, it was taking much time in winding
up and due to this we decided to assign each question to each member of
the group and we were able to complete them at last and we also tried to
merge with Ice Cream Unit 1 in order to put our demands in front of
other units and management. So in this group my major takeaway was
that planning and strategy formulation is must before proceeding further.
And also, Bharti, one of my group members was leading the group by
suggesting, acting and directing.

2.GE and J&J Group

GE Case
So, in this group we got 2 cases i.e. General Electricals and Johnson &
Johnson to answer some set of questions. At the time of first case i.e. GE,
we all decided to come prepared with the case on the next day. On the
next day some people came early before the time while some came late
including me. We decided to analyse the case question wise and went
through it page by page. Yamini and Anmol were the two observers who
were noting the working of the group. All the members contributed their
inputs. And one thing that was happening to me was, when I tried to make
any point someone else started telling it before me. Shreya was taking the
lead in the group, and all the other members were suggesting the
relevance of their points.
J&J Case
Now, at the time of J&J case, the entire group became inactive. When I
received the case I studied it on that day itself and on the next day I jotted

down all my points and inputs regarding the case for further discussion.
Nobody (including me) had tried or initiated to gather the group for the
discussion instead the day before the submission date, most of the
members tried to do the case on the whatsapp itself, and due to this I was
not able to contribute my inputs to this case as I was not active on
whatsapp during those 3-4 days. Therefore, the experience was not so
good in this case, because the discussion was not happened in front and
presence of everyone but instead on whatsapp. One thing that I found not
so good about some of the members of any group is that they do not want
to stay back in the class (so that we can have a rich discussion) may be
because of their some personal reasons, but this is not feasible for any
kind of team work.

3.Group of Trip-Planning and Kite-Making

Trip-Planning
This group was also big as that of GE group. So, all the members started
by discussing about where to go, some members suggested some places
that are too far and some including me just suggesting of planning the trip
in Delhi itself. Anmol and Aashna were somewhat leading the group. So,
talking about the structure and working of the group, the importance was
given to everyones idea and input, but some of the members were
interested only in speaking and putting their opinions first and not in
listening to others. In the last Nitin compiled all the group work in proper
format and sent it to everyone, so that all of us can have a look on that
and suggest more changes to be done. So, if talking about the hierarchy
of the group, it was somewhat flat.
Kite-Making
In the starting of the activity, I was excited after seeing those paper bags
containing sticks. Later on, we all got to know that we have to make kites.
So, we started by splitting our group into 2 parts, one was making 18dimension and other was making 24-dimension kite. I was helping in
making the small one (18-dimension kite), and while making it, it was
Abhishek who was directing us and taking the lead, because of his prior
experience. In our second sub group Rishabh was leading the group,
everyone contributed his/her hand equally in the team process and we
enjoyed a lot. Fortunately, we were the first one, who had completed this
activity and both of our kites flew high in the sky. If I compare the work
done in my other groups and this group, I found this activity very
interesting, as here everyone contributed equally and interacted with
everyone.

4.Final Project Group (Washrooms project)

I found this group quite active as compared to my other groups. Most of

the group members went to the washrooms of the university to note down
the issues associated with them(washroom). After that, in the group
discussion everyone contributed their ideas about related problems and
issues which were relevant enough to be considered. Yamini and
Devyanshi were directing the group and were taking initiatives to interact
with all the group members. They were also motivating and suggesting us
to do what is required and what is not. Issues and problems associated
with ladies and gents washroom were noted down by the girls and boys of
our group respectively. There was a kind of good working atmosphere in
this group because everyone came forward, with his/her own set of issues,
suggestions, ideas and opinions. There was only one person who was not
able to contribute, because of some of his personal problems, that was
not a big issue. There was active participation in the group from
everyones side and all of us were divided with some work to be done, and
that was completed successfully. So, i felt motivated by working with such
a participatory group.
