Excel 2 Word

1) This document provides instructions for two Excel assignments involving pivot tables. Students will download healthcare and West Nile virus data from a public database, import it into Excel, and create pivot tables to analyze and answer questions about the data. 2) For the first assignment, students will create a pivot table displaying West Nile virus cases by county and year. They will then answer questions about cases in specific counties and years. 3) For the second assignment, students will create a pivot table showing hospital bed capacity by county and bed type. Excel Assignment #2

Pivot Tables
WHAT IS A PIVOT TABLE
A pivot table is a program tool in excel that allows you to reorganize and
summarize selected columns and rows of data in a spreadsheet or
database table to obtain a desired report. A pivot table doesn't actually
change the spreadsheet or database, it just allows the user to manipulate
the data in ways that they see fit.
For this assignment you will be learning how to download data off of public
health websites and enter that data into an excel spreadsheet. From there
you will be creating pivot table with the data and answering questions and
completing tasks with that table.
Task #1 15 points
For this task you need to access data from the CA Department of Public
Health and Human Services Open Data Portal. https://chhs.data.ca.gov/.
Once there select All data and then find the Datasets for West Nile Virus
Cases for 2006-present. You will want to Download (or Export) that data as
an xls file. Upon downloading this data you will open it in an excel file and
save it for manipulation. Once you have saved the data you will want to
create your pivot table.
To create your pivot table you must first select a box that is inside the data
set. Then go to the data tab and click on pivot table and create a manual
pivot table. In the Create a Pivot Table Wizard that comes up you will want to
choose a New worksheet as its location. From here you will have access to
the pivot table builder. This will allow you to set your columns rows and
values.
For your first pivot table use the county as the column and the year as the
row. Then include the positive cases within the values tab. Now you have
your first table. From here adjust the column labels to include only San
Bernardino, San Diego, Riverside, Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
Answer the following questions:
How many cases of West Nile did Orange county have in
2011 : 519
Which county had the most number of cases between 20062015: Los Angeles

Which county had the least number of cases between 20062015 : San Diego
Which year was West Nile least prevalent in all counties : 2009
Which year did the West Nile epidemic peak in So Cal : 2015
