I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):

The students will be able to identify the characteristics of an insect by completing the guided notes.
II. Instructional Materials:

1 big book copy of World Discovery Science Reader: Ants, Bees, and Other Social Insects

20 copies of the World Discovery Science Reader: Ants, Bees, and Other Social Insects book

20 copies of the Insect Guided Notes

Insect Powerpoint

10 Insect Characteristics Matching Game


III. Subject Matter/ Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of additional content):
A. Prerequisite skills

Previous knowledge of being able to to write down facts to fill in the guided notes sheet..

Previous knowledge of being able to match cards together.


B. Key Vocabulary

Antennae: the long, often slender, "feelers" on the head.

Insects: A group of animals that have six legs and three body parts. The three parts are the head, thorax,
and abdomen. Most have antennae and wings.

Life Cycle: The stages in the life of an insect. There are two kinds of life cycles.
o
Egg: the first stage.
o
Larva: the form of an insect that hatches from eggs.
o
Pupa: the form of an insect between the larva and adult stages. The pupa usually has some
sort of covering to protect the insect. A cocoon is one kind.
o
Adult: a fully grown insect.
C. Big Idea

Students will be able to fill out the graphic organizer by filling in the missing information on the guided
notes and then completing the matching game.
D. Content

Understanding and identifying the characteristics of an insect are.


IV. Implementation:
A. Introduction

The teacher will have the students come up to the carpet.

The teacher will then tell the class that they will be reading a book on insects.

Today I am going to read you the book, Insects, to everyone. While I am reading the story to you I want
everyone to listen very closely as you may learn some information that will help you in an activity that we
are going to do later.

The teacher will read the book to the class and after each section is read the teacher will have the
students turn to a partner and share a fact that they learned in that section.

The teacher will then have the students go back to their desks and wait for further instructions.

The teacher will then pass out the guided notes to the students.
B. Development

The teacher will explain to the students that they need to fill in the blanks as we go through the
powerpoint.

The teacher will go through the powerpoint and after every other slide the teacher will ask the students if
they have filled in all of the blanks on the guided notes sheet.

The teacher will then have the students share with a partner one fact that they found interesting about
insects.

The teacher will have the students pair up and move around the classroom so that they have enough
room to play the game.

The teacher will pass out the matching game to the students and explain the directions and rules.

The teacher will walk around as the students are playing the game and assist any students that need
assistance.
The teacher will then have the students clean up the cards and hand them back to the teacher and go
back to their desk for further instruction.

C. Closure

The teacher will then pass out the exit slips to the students for them to complete.
After the students complete the exit slip and the teacher collects them, the teacher will tell the class what
they will be doing tomorrow in class.
D. Accommodations / Differentiation
Student with a visual impairment.

The guided notes will have a larger text for the student and the teacher will print out a copy of
the powerpoint in larger text for the student.
E. Assessment/Evaluation plan 1. Formative

A teacher created exit slip will be used to assess the students knowledge.

There is no summative assessment.
