A simulation system for monitoring, planning and

optimizing Fluid Catalytic Cracking units.

AspenTechs new refinery reactor models

Aspen FCC is a member of the AspenTech new generation of refinery reactor models. It rigorously
simulates the riser/reactor and regenerator kinetics, accurately predicting yields for a wide range of
feedstocks and operating conditions.
As part of the Aspen Plus unit operation model family, Aspen FCC easily connects to rigorous
fractionator and gas plant models, creating a fully integrated model of the entire FCC complex.
Aspen FCC can be used as a stand-alone, offline model with Aspen Plus for online unit performance
modeling or integrated with DMCplus and Aspen Optimizer for online optimization.

Benefits of Aspen FCC

The benefits of applying Aspen FCC to a typical unit range from 10-35 cents per barrel. For a 30,000
BPD unit, that constitutes benefits ranging from $960,000 to $3,360,000 (USD) per year. Aspen FCC
achieves these benefits through improved selection of feedstocks, operating conditions and catalysts.

Aspen FCC features

Feed characterization
Feed composition is based on readily available properties, such as gravity and distillation. It may also be
characterized using mass spectrometry, NMR and HPLC data.

Riser/reactor cracking
Aspen FCC includes detailed riser and reactor kinetic models that have the following features:
fundamental reaction pathways
riser geometry and fluidization calculations
rigorous heat and material balance

Regenerator and catalyst stripper

Aspen FCC includes detailed regenerator and catalyst stripper models that have the following features:
rigorous combustion kinetics
full-burn and partial-burn operating modes
dilute phase after-burn and heat balance effects
catalyst density and fluidization effects
catalyst stripping efficiency effect on coke make

Pressure Balance
Aspen FCC calculates a detailed pressure balance using:
vessel geometry and catalyst inventories
riser and transfer line geometry
fluidization media
slide valve characteristics

aspen Rxfinery
Engineers leveraging the best models to generate substantial benefits.
Aspen Rxfinery is AspenTechs approach to the staged application of rigorous refining models. Offline models can
be used for plant studies and increased planning LP accuracy. The offline models can later be installed online for
performance monitoring and then used ultimately for closed-loop optimization. Quick process studies and
benefits audits at each stage are key features of Aspen Rxfinery.

The refining business is changing faster than ever

new gasoline and diesel specifications are changing rapidly in todays refining industry
feed prices, product prices and energy costs are changing rapidly
refinery staff bandwidths are stretched to the limit, yet accurate decisions must still be made in a timely manner
