Tutorial 1

This document contains 5 questions from a tutorial on engineering statics. The questions involve calculating forces and components of forces on various structures shown in diagrams. Forces must be determined to satisfy conditions of equilibrium. Multiple steps are required to solve for unknown forces based on given forces and configurations of objects.

ENT141/3 - ENGINEERING STATICS (SEMESTER 1 - 2015/16)

TUTORIAL 1
Q1. Referring to Figure 1;
(a) The magnitude of the resultant force acting on the bracket is to be 400 N. Determine the
magnitude of F1 if =30.
(b) If the resultant force acting on the bracket is to be directed along the positive u axis, and
the magnitude of F1 is required to be minimum, determine the magnitudes of the resultant
force and F1.

Q2. Referring to Figure 2;
(a) Express each of the forces on the free-body diagram in Cartesian vector form.
(b) Determine the magnitude and coordinate direction angles of the resultant force acting on
the hook.

Q3. Referring to Figure 3;

(a) Determine the projection of force F = 400 N acting along line AC of the pipe assembly.
Express the result as a Cartesian vector.
(b) Determine the magnitudes of the components of force F = 400 N acting parallel and
perpendicular to segment BC of the pipe assembly.

Q4. Referring to Figure 4;
(a) Determine the stretch in springs AC and AB for equilibrium of the 2-kg block. The springs
are shown in the equilibrium position.
(b) The unstretched length of spring AB is 3 m. If the block is held in the equilibrium position
shown, determine the mass of the block at D.

Q5. Referring to Figure 5;
(a) If the balloon is subjected to a net uplift force of F = 800 N, determine the tension
developed in ropes AB, AC, AD.
(b) If each one of the ropes will break when it is subjected to a tensile force of 450 N,
determine the maximum uplift force F the balloon can have before one of the ropes
breaks.
