Handout - CDMP Unit 1 Lesson 9

Mise en scene refers to the five elements that communicate visual information to the audience within the frame of a shot: settings and props, costumes/makeup/hair, lighting/color, performance, and composition. Settings and props establish the location and context of a scene, such as living rooms, restaurants, and forests in romantic comedies and horror films. Lighting can be high key or low key to set different moods. Performance and facial expressions convey emotions like anger, seriousness, and fear. Composition, like positioning a character on an ornate golden throne above others, communicates their importance and status.

TASK: Look at the following image. Analyse the Mise en Scene and
describe why the shot has been set up as it has. Remember to
consider all five elements.

The character in the upper middle has a place of royalty and is more important than the
other characters below him. Hes also stood in an ornate, golden throne-like pit to show
that hes well defended and also wealthy. The rows of guards below the king also show his
royalty and keep the character in the red cape from escaping presuming he is being
punished.
