Universiti Teknologi Mara: Experiment 1.2 and Experiment 1.3 Solar Cell Series Circuit Solar Cell Parellel Circuit

1. This document describes an experiment conducted by 5 students to investigate solar cell circuits connected in series and parallel. Solar cell output was measured for single, series, and parallel circuit configurations. 2. Key results: A single solar cell produced 19.08V and 227.4mA (4.3388W). In series, two solar cells produced 39.42V and 320mA (12.6144W). In parallel, two solar cells produced 19.61V and 589mA (11.5503W). 3. The conclusion is that the series circuit produced the highest voltage and lowest current, while the parallel circuit produced the lowest voltage and highest current. The power output was also calculated and

Introduction

A series circuit is composed of components connected in series. In series circuit, the current
through the component is the same, and the voltage across the component is the sum of all
voltage.
I1 = I 2 = I 3
V = V1 + V2 + V3
A parallel circuit is composed of components connected in parallel. In parallel circuit, the
voltage across all the components is the same, and the total current is the sum of the current
through each component.
I = I 1 + I2 + I 3
V1 = V2 = V3
The total power in wattage (W or watts) delivered is the voltage times the amperage.
Power = Volts Amps
Objectives
To demonstrate how solar cells and panels are connected, like batteries, to achieve certain
ratings of voltage and amperes.

Materials
1. 2 solar panels: Encapsulated solar panel/cell of 10W, Isc = 0.66 A, Voc
= 21.3 V, size (16.510.71.31)
2. Metal halide or tungsten halogen discharged lamp : 1000W, 240
V/50GHz.
3. Digital multimeter.

Discussion
In this experiment 1.2 & 1.3 we able to build series and parallel circuits in
order to power different loads with varied voltage and current requiems using
simple calculations.

In series, the voltage is increase and amperage is same. The value of DC

volts for series circuit is 39.42 V and amperage is 320mA.
In parallel, the voltage is constant and amperage is additive. So, the value
of DC amps is 589mA and for volts is 19.61V.
In this experiment, there are same precautions that should be emphasized
such as the circuit must be connected correctly because the current will flow only
in complete circuit. The distance of light source must be keep constant for every
trial of the experiment. This experiment was conducted in dark condition to
ensure there is no excess and unnecessary light source.

Conclusion
For the solar cell series circuits the total power is 12.6144W while for the parallel
circuit the power is 11.5501W.

Question
a) What is the power of the single solar cell?
W = 19.08 x 0.2274
= 4.3388 W

b) What is the power of the solar cells in series?

W = 39.42 x 0.32
= 12.6144 W
c) What is the power of solar cells in parallel?
W= 19.61 x 0.589
=11.5503 W
