Safety Instructions
The following instructions to be followed before, during and after work:
This instruction manual to be read completely before initial start-up. If strictly followed,
no danger should occur.
This machine must only be run by qualified adult persons (firemen) who are fully
familiar with possible risks. Directives for Liquid Blasters (ZH 1/406) and operation
instructions Working with Liquid Blasters (BGV D 15) as well as instructions of the
fire-brigade to be followed.
The machine is not suitable for unattended operation and must be operated according
to specification. Protective clothing to be worn.
The water jet emerging from the spray pistol has a dangerous cutting effect. Therefore the water jet must never be directed onto persons, animals or electrical installations in a distance of less than 1 m. It must never be used for cleaning of clothes,
footwear and the like. Be aware of torque and recoil. Ensure stable foothold.
The max. allowed pressure which is stated on the type plate must not be exceeded.
The safety/control valve opens, if the max. operating pressure is exceeded by more
than 10 % and returns the water back into the suction side of the high pressure pump.
The safety/control valve is workshop-set and sealed. Adjustment must not be
changed.
Indoor operation of combustion engines is forbidden, unless proper ventilation and
exhaust gas evacuation is guaranteed. Carbon monoxide is lethal.
Unsuitable respectively defective high pressure hoses often cause severe accidents
during operation. Therefore high pressure hoses to be carefully inspected before
start-up and replaced by original OERTZEN equipment in case of damage. Use of
other than original OERTZEN equipment results in expiration of the EC Declaration of
Conformity, as well as of product liability and warranty.
Used or damaged high pressure hoses must never be repaired and reused but to be
replaced by original OERTZEN equipment.
Extinguishing pistols with delayed closing mechanism must not be used because of
risk of injuries.
Lever in open position must never be blocked or fixed in any way.
Use of extinguishing pistols of less than 750 mm length is prohibited.
The machine must not be run in areas jeopardized by fire or explosions. During
operation at filling stations Technical for flammable liquids (TfbF) to be observed.
Consumables to be handled throroughly according to technical rules; safety and
environmental regulations to be observed.
When opening the machine in case of malfunctions or emergency, switch off by
means of the ignition switch.
Secure the machine against moving. It is equipped with a parking brake which must
be set during working.
During loading hoisting device to be fastened properly at jack rings. Ensure balanced
load distribution.
Repair work in the high pressure section of the machine (pump, hoses, piping) only to
be carried out by qualified personnel.
Exhaust gas evacuation area is getting hot. Do not touch!
After work the machine to be locked and secured against unauthorized/accidental
operation by means of the safety lever at the extinguishing pistol.
Minimum extinguishing distance for electrical installations is 1 m. Only to be used up
to max. 1000 V.
Only foam agents approved by OERTZEN to be used. Keep away from eyes.
Never unreel extinguishing hose while hand crank is swung out. Keep your hands out
of the working area of the hand crank. Keep a safety distance and take care that
clothes cannot be clutched by the crank.
3.
Configuration/Operation
The high pressure fire extinguisher HDL 250 is an electrically independent
machine to extinguish class A and class B fires by means of water atomised
under high pressure with the option of foam agent dosing. The extraordinary
efficiency of the high pressure fire extinguisher results from the atomisation of
the water at a working pressure of up to 250 bar. By atomisation the surface of
the water respectively foam agent solution is extremely extended so effecting
a rapid evaporation. The high extinguishing efficiency is based on the synergetic effect of heat extraction from the fire by evaporation and reduction of the
oxigen concentration by the steam. A significant advantage is the fact that
damage caused by water is practically avoided. The high pressure
extinguishing hose is steel-reinforced, heat resistant, extraordinarily light,
flexible and so easily manoeuvrable. It allows the rapid fire-attack in a distance
of 50 m from the HDL. The fire assault device allows the quick roll-over from
high pressure water mist to heavy foam to high pressure net water mist, as
required.
Depending on requirements at site the following extinguishing options are
available:
Model
Extinguishing Agent
Fire Class A
Fire Class B
- high pressure water mist
-/HDL 250 WS
- high pressure net water mist - high pressure net water mist
- heavy foam
- heavy foam
The high pressure fire extinguisher HDL mainly consists of a low speed high
pressure inline plunger pump which is driven by a low emission four stroke Vmotor. The motor is protected against dry-running by a low oil level cut-out
which stops the motor in case of low oil level.
The water is directed via filling valve with strainer into the vented water
storage tank, where it is taken via an Y-filter from by the high pressure pump
which boosts it together with the diameter of the respective extinguishing
nozzle up to required working pressure.
A safety control valve is arranged downstreams of the high pressure pump,
which opens as soon as the operating pressure is exceeded by more than
10 % and returns the water which cannot be taken by the nozzle back into the
suction line of the high pressure pump.
Depending on requirements at site, the support roll-over handle at the
extinguishing device allows the quick roll-over from high pressure water mist to
foam/high pressure net water mist (fire class A/B) at opened foam dosing
valve.

Mounting/Initial Installation
The HDL 250 to be mounted workmanlike in a way that all components can
easily be reached. The fire assault device to be easily accessible and the hose
to be quickly reeled-off.
The safe exhaust evacuation to be ensured (as a standard in the fixed
installations the exhaust evacuation is arranged from the side to the front on
the left). There are various exhaust evacuation designs available for the fixed
installations, in order to meet all structural requirements.
The machine to be mounted by bolting the vibration dampers onto the vehicle
structure. The vibration dampers prevent vibrations of the machine from being
transferred to the vehicle.
Take care that machine components will not hinder e.g. the vehicles blinds to
be moved.
If, in order to save weight, the machine not to be started by its own battery but
by the vehicles battery, correct polarity, dimension and installation of power
cables to be guaranteed (power requirements: 12 V).
If the water supply to be done from an external water storage tank as per Fig.
1, the supply lines to have an inside diameter of 25 mm and to be suction
resistant.
In order to allow easy reeling up the high pressure hose, sufficient clearance
for the hand crank of the hose reel (approx. 200 mm) to be provided.
Sufficient headroom to be provided to allow filling of the water tank via the Dconnection.
In order to avoid germ formation/biological growth in the water storage tank
the water to be mixed with a disinfectant, e.g. Desalgin make BAYROL
(5 ml/125 l of water).
ATTENTION: Only tap water to be used!

Start-up/Shut-down
Read operating manual and motor manufacturers instructions
carefully and completely.
First Steps:
In order to guarantee proper function and trouble-free operation,
the following checks to be carried out before start-up:
13
Operation
This operation manual describes the operation of the HDL 250 WS basic
design. If OERTZEN FIRE-TEC accessories are used, refer to extra
manual which is attached hereto.
Determine fire class at foam agent dosing valve (11)
Vertical position class A
Horizontal position class B
Start motor as follows Observe motor manufacturer's instructions:
In order to ease starting of motor, put fire assault device into
position "foam" and open extinguishing pistol for depressurisation purposes.
Start procedure cold motor electric start
Pull out choke (8) completely.
Put gas pedal (9) upward as far as possible (full load).
Open extinguishing pistol.
Turn ignition key (7) clockwise into position "START", so that motor
starts. Starter only to be activated for max. 10 seconds to avoid
damage.
Choke to be pushed in slowly in order to avoid that the motor dies
down.
Start procedure warm motor electric start
Do not pull out choke (8).
Put gas pedal (9) upward to load.
Open extinguishing pistol.
Turn ignition key (7) clockwise into position "START", so that motor
starts. Starter only to be activated for max. 10 seconds to avoid
damage. As soon as motor has started, put gas pedal (9) into
position full load.
Motor is additionally equipped with a reverse start for emergency which
is started as follows: Adjustments as described above for cold/warm
starting procedure as well as for after starting of motor.
Start procedure reverse start
Turn ignition key clockwise into position "1".
Take handle and carefully pull out until engagement, then strongly pull
out in order to start motor. Put handle back into initial position.
If the motor in operational state and at correct oil level does not start
after several attempts, most likely the oil pressure is poor. In this case
disconnect the cable of oil pressure switch (at the male threaded flange
of the motor oil filter) upon start-up.
As soon as the motor has started, cable of oil pressure switch to be
reconnected, as otherwise the low oil level cut-out is out of function.
