Rogers, A., Yoon, B., & Malek, C. (2008) - Beijing Olympic Stadium 2008 As Biomimicry of A Bird's Nest. Avaliable at

This document discusses biomimetic approaches in architecture. It notes that while some projects take visual inspiration from nature, they do not incorporate nature's functional systems. The author analyzes the lichen symbiotic structure as an example, which provides effective structure for algae and fungus. The author builds an original multilayer structure inspired by lichen's modular basis that can support each other and be easily assembled and disassembled. This offers a biomimetic approach focused on function over form to provide sustainable architectural solutions inspired by nature.

Introduction

In architecture, new shapes which earn from parametric methodespecially, done by Grasshopper in Rhino 3D-are trendy method. This tool, skill,
or method can produce exotic forms which were impossible to make before. To
generate parametric form, program demands certain algorithm, and these
algorithms came from various sources. Two main sources of algorithmic design
are mathematics and nature, and majority of mathematic algorithmic sources also
came from the rules of nature. The Natures algorithms were earned by laminated
experiments and experiences, and all those results were revised through eternal
period of time. It evolved very practical, simple and effective ways. However,
contemporary architecture focused on natures look, not its system. Beijing
Olympic Stadium-Herzog & de Meuron, 2008-considered one of an example
when we discuss about nature imitating architecture, also natures feature used
only to make its unique exterior structure. Bird Nest inspired structure, but there
was only natures appearance, no functional connection. 1 The Swiss Re
Headquarters-Norman Foster, 2004-announced that idea came from Glass
Sponge, sea creature. Nevertheless its unique plan, there is no relation over than
its nature-inspired looks. The essence of Biomimetic approach is more functiondriven method, and understanding natures functional value is one of important
approaches for architecture. Especially connecting natural life-forms special
whole system into entire architecture is unique approach. Mazzoleni, I in 2013
wrote about functional implementation of biology on Architecture Follows NatureBiomimetic Principles for Innovative Design but contents concentrated in only
facades and skins. Pawlyn, M wrote coherent approaches toward architecture

with biomimicry on Biomimicry in architecture still focused on systematic

solution. Thus, implementing entire system of specific species into architecture is
rare approach, and will provide new perspective of design and solution.

I searched the origin of Bio-related terminology through the historical facts

to study clear meaning of Biomimicry, Biometric, Bionic, and Biotech.
Research started from infamous Bionics Symposium in 1960 to recent
Biomimicry 3.8, and focusing to changes of notions.

I studied that function-driven biomimetic approach is proper solution in

architecture. (-CV5)

Lichen used as main example of research. And I analyze Lichens

systematic structure which representing providing effective structure to
algae and fungus either.

I built original function base structure from Lichen forming system. (CV5)

I make multi-layered independent structure which is Lichen inspired, and

also studied Lichens modular basis which can support each other. In
addition, this structure also can be easy to assemble and disassemble.

Through this research, I offer one more appropriate biomimetic approach

with functional perspective.
This paper aims to find another approach of Biomimicry or Biomimetics in

architecture and advances in methodology of problem solution to apply results

from nature into architecture in general and analyze various possibilities through
example project and specimen: Lichen. Further more, also I provide one
framework how to use natural specimen as a functional resource for architectural
project with computational way. This framework is not a universal framework,
although foundation of research can be apply to basic phase of implementation.

Method of the paper is basic research, example project, and developing

process about biomimicry and biomimetics. And to support ground to theory,
example implementation is included. The example implementation contains
specimen analysis, organising result of analysis, generating practical solution and
utilize solution in architectural project.
As a result, it is expected that this paper offers another example of
framework for pre-research before implanting specific nature life-forms functional
features into architectural premises from structure to facade. In addition, this
paper also provide information about how to interpret biomimetics features into
architectural elements. I hope this paper helps to improve biomimetics
methodology in other to increasing architectures performance and sustainability
through mimicking natures one.
