Introduction

Infrastructure
Basic physical and organizational structure needed for the operation

of a society or enterprise , or the services and facilities necessary for

an economy to function.
It can be generally defined as the set of interconnected structural

elements that provide a framework supporting an entire structure of

development.
The term typically refers to the technical structures that support a

society, such as roads, bridges, water supply, sewers, electrical

grids, telecommunications, and so forth,

Physical components of interrelated systems providing commodities and services

essential to enable, sustain, or enhance societal living conditions."

Defining Terminology.
A Depot is an organizational unit of a Transport Undertaking directly

responsible for the operation of bus service

A bus terminus is a designated place where a bus or coach starts or ends

its scheduled route.

Bus stop is a waiting, boarding and alighting area, usually designated by

distinctive signs and by curbs or pavement markings.

A workshop may be a room or building which provides both the area

and tools (or machinery) that may be required for the manufacture or repair
of manufactured goods.
A control room or operations center or operations control center(OCC)

is a room serving as a central space where a large physical facility or

physically dispersed service can be monitored and controlled.

Guidelines/tools for Terminals

Synchronized and functional interaction between passengers,

buses/operators as well feeder modes such as IPT.

Efficiency in Access and Egress to and from the terminal for both

passengers and buses.

Optimum traffic circulation as well as provision of amenities for

passengers; rest areas and other facilities for bus drivers; as well
workshop and depot space for operators.

30

Terminal Typologies
Independent Intra city bus terminal Such as Kala Nagar Terminal,

BEST, Mumbai; Nehru Place Terminal, DTC, Delhi; etc.

Independent Interstate Bus Terminal such as ISBT, Gurgaon, Old

Gurgaon
A combined Interstate and Intra City Bus Terminal Such as Sector

43 Bus Terminal, Chandigarh

A Multi Modal Interchange Hub for the City which includes a Bus

Terminal such as Anand Vihar ISBT, Delhi

31

Functions of Bus Terminals, Stations & Stops

Provide Convenient Boarding and alighting
Provide passenger information and amenities

Integration with Other modes

Provide transfer / interchanges
Provide sheltered space for waiting

33

Bus Station/Stops

34

Types of Bus Stops

Bus stop (Pole): low passenger volumes and have low
frequency bus services (less than every half an hour)
Simple Stops - basic transit stop with a simple shelter
Enhanced Stop enhanced shelters with additional features
such as weather protection and lighting.
Designated Stop - Include level passenger boarding and
alighting, grade separated connection between platform and a
full range of passenger amenities, including retail service and a
complete array of passenger information.
Intermodal Terminal or Transit Center - level boarding and
accommodate the transfers from the bus service to the local
bus and other public transit modes (e.g. rail transit, and even
intercity bus and rail).

Servers.
Required furniture.

Communications Devices.

54

Monitoring at Control Room

The following monitoring of buses can be done if GPS is provided in the

buses:
In shedding and Out shedding report of buses.
Stoppage and skipping report.
Driver performance report.
Vehicle utilization report.

Kilometer and Trip performance report.

Route diversion report.
Over speeding Report.
Duty completion report.

Environmental Consideration

58

Environmental considerations
The activities of a bus depot and workshop can have a significant impact

on the environment. If adequate measures are not taken they can cause
serious damage.
The main potential problems are traffic congestion caused by buses

entering and leaving the depot, pollution from exhaust fumes and excessive
noise from the vehicles themselves and from other workshop activities.
Less visible, but often more serious, is environmental damage caused by

waste oil or spilled fuel entering the drainage system or polluting nearby
rivers. A vehicle workshop generates a considerable quantity of waste oil
and if this is not disposed of properly it can cause serious pollution.
These environmental problems can be minimized with good design of the

facilities, proper maintenance, and good discipline and housekeeping.
