Case Study Project-Control
A group of students (3-4 students) shall select a case study from the subjects (Learning Outcomes) below.
CLO 2- Build, simulate and "tune" a three - term Proportional, Integral and Derivative controller
for a single - input single - output system.
CLO 3- Design and simulate a feedforward controller based on the general concept of
feedforward control.
CLO 4- Identify the function, nomenclature and structure of Piping and Instrumentation
Diagrams (P&ID's).
CLO 5- Use common types of measuring devices and Final Control Elements specific to
mechanical control systems.
The students have to write a report about the case study (following the below format) and conduct
presentation. In the upcoming class, I will assign topics on the groups, please read all cases, since each
topic will assigned to only one group.
Project Report Content
The report should be 15-20 pages maximum. The format should be as outlined below. The report should
include the following.
1. Title: A statement of project title that must simply describe the study to be undertaken.
2. Table of Contents
This page should list all sections, chapters and sub-headings referred to the respective page numbers
as reflected in the body of the Report.
3. Introduction
Give a general introduction about the topic with highlights about each paragraph. The introduction
should not exceed one page. The introduction should include explanation about the importance of the
subject under study.
4. Paragraphs:
Detailed explanation about each paragraph that explains vibration subjects including, graphs
examples and application.
5. Conclusions
State your findings and how those results agree with the theoretical calculations
(Due date: Nov 17th) (No extensions), student should submit a WORD report on BBLearn
Notes: below a detailed description about each (Learning outcome, CLO).
Attached a marking scheme for the report and presentation.
Topics:
CLO 2- Build, simulate and "tune" a three - term Proportional, Integral and Derivative
controller for a single - input single - output system.
Learning outcome 2,
Describe the concept of ON/OFF controller and the limitations of such a system.
Model and simulate a proportional feedback controller, and analyze the systems steady-state
error.
Model and simulate a proportional and integral feedback controller (PI Controller), and discuss
the effect of the integral term on the rise time, settling time and overshoot.
Analyze a three - term feedback controller, and explain the effects of modifying proportional,
derivative and integral gains on the transient response and steady state error.
Apply Ziegler- Nichols tuning rules for P, PI, and PID controllers in order to achieve optimal
transient response.
Learning outcome 3:
Define the feedforward control system, and show how this type of controller can be used in
process control applications (e.g. Heat exchanger, stirred tank,)
Compare relative merits and demerits of feedforward and feedback configurations. Explain
giving an example how the combination of the two configurations (feedforward - feedback) can
provide superior control than either of the two alone.
For a system with a measured disturbance, determine the feedforward controller and implement
it with/without a feedback controller using a computer tool (e.g. Matlab/Simulink), and analyze
the effect of each/both controller(s) on the system response.
Define the ratio control and elaborate upon why is it useful in process control.
Learning outcome 4:
Identify the items and their symbols used in P&ID.
For a given process P&ID, identify and describe the function of all the control systems included.
For a given simple control system application, develop a P&ID showing all the standard
symbols.
Learning outcome 5:
Describe the basic construction, operating principles & applications, connect, calibrate and use
transducers found in fluidic systems for the measurement of pressure and flow.
Describe the basic construction, operating principles & applications, connect, calibrate and use
transducers found in thermal systems for the measurement of temperature.
Describe the basic construction, operating principles & applications, connect, calibrate and use
transducers found in mechanical systems for the measurement of torque, speed and distance.
Describe with the aid of graphs, the linear, quick- opening, and equal -percentage flow
characteristics of valves with different trim. Indicate typical applications for each type.
Calculate the required Cv value for a typical control valve application, and compare calculated
results with results from a laboratory experiment.
