Problem statement:
During the preparation of the laminated stump socket, the socket adapter, is often deformed by the
prosthetic technician. Deformation of the Socket adapter makes it brittle and prone to breaking.
Root Cause:
The socket adapter is made of austenitic stainless steels such as SS304, for corrossion resistance and
cost reasons. These steels tend to work-harden when plastically deformed.
Current process overview:
i. A plaster cast of the stump is made
ii. Using the cast, a male mould of plaster is made around a steel rod
iii. The lamination socket anchor is deformed as required to match the end of the male mould
and fixed onto the mold
iv. Layers of fiber mat are applied
v. A plastic bag is used to cover the fiber mat and sealed
vi. Resin is introduced and evenly distributed under vacuum
Proposed Process:
i. A plaster cast of the stump is made
ii. Using the cast, a male mould of plaster is made with a steel threaded rod, such that some of
the threaded portion protrudes above the mold.
iii. A spherical termination piece, with radius matching the lamination anchor is screwed on
to the rod
iv. The lamination socket anchor is fixed onto the termination piece
v. Layers of fiber mat are applied
vi. A plastic bag is used to cover the fiber mat and sealed
vii. Resin is introduced and evenly distributed under vacuum
