DSP For Explicit FEA AUC1999

This document discusses sampling theory and aliasing errors that can occur from insufficiently sampling high frequency signals. It provides examples of signals that are sampled correctly, aliased, and discusses how aliasing errors can cause misinterpretation. It also references resources on digital signal processing, decimation, anti-alias filtering, and signal processing tools for ABAQUS and MATLAB.

aliased

The second type of error, however, is much more damaging and dangerous. The aliasing errors
shown in Figure 2c - d are more dangerous because the results can look so good. Aliased results
can look like physically reasonable signals smooth curves with low frequency content. In fact,
with out prior knowledge of the original signal, it is impossible to tell whether the 0.1 kHz signals
in Figure 2c - d were originally 0.1 kHz signals or aliases from some originally higher frequency
signal. It is these aliasing errors that are at the root of much of the misinterpretation of explicit
dynamics models.
