EE 1 Problem Set 2

Answer the following problems on short bond papers. Do not round off! Box your final Answers. Submit
your papers on Monday, February 24, before you start your exam.
1. The voltage drop across two series-connected units A and B are 60 and 90 V respectively.
Assuming Va to be the reference phasor, calculate the resultant voltage and the angle it makes
with the x-axis if a) VB lags VA by 90o, b) VB leads VA by 60o.
2. A 25-cycle sinusoidal voltage source has an effective value of 340 V. Determine the
instantaneous values of voltage a) 0.007 s after the wave passes through zero in a positive
direction, b) 0.01 s after the wave passes through zero in a negative direction.
3. The in-phase currents in the parallel branches of a circuit have the following equations:
A, and
A. a) Write the equation for the resultant current of the two
waves; b) calculate the effective currents in the individual branches, and the resultant current.
4. Three incandescent lamps are connected in parallel to a 115-volt 60-cyclw source. If the lamp
ratings are 75, 100, and 150 W, a) calculate the rms value of the resultant current; b) write the
equation for the resultant current.
5. A 5-F capacitor is connected in series with a variable inductor to a 20-volt 796-cycle source. For
what value of inductance will the current be a) 2 A, lagging; b) 2 A, leading?
6. A series circuit consisting of an 80- resistor, a 0.3-H inductor, and a 50-F capacitor is
connected to a 120-V 60-cycle source. Calculate the following: a) equivalent impedance of the
circuit; b) current; c) P, Q, S and pf.
7. A voltage of 120 10o V is impressed across a load consisting of two parallel paths. Branch 1 is
an R-L circuit that takes a current I1 = 15 -50o A, and branch 2 is an R-C circuit whose current is
I2 = 8 40o A. Calculate the total P, Q, and S delivered to the load.
8. Find the total impedance with respect to nodes A and B.
