Day Seven

Riley lies awake at night, the pale moonlight cascading over her face hesitantly. She glances
over to the clock on her lampstand; the green numbers read 10:00 PM. I shouldnt be awake,
Riley thinks to herself. Its well past Bedtime
Hour. But she cant shake this feeling. Riley is still
in denial, in a state of war within her mind. I ts not possible to feel anything besides Happiness. I
am happy. Im not frightened. Im not sad. I cant

be. She rehearses the lines over and over

again in her head, her wild thoughts a lullaby that put her to sleep.

Day Eleven (Morning)

Attention Precinct H. Code Red. Code Red. Code Red; Gate 3, South. This is not a drill. All
students and all faculty are to evacuate to Security Zone 3 immediately. Please lock down all
Precinct H convenience stores and inventory immediately. Working Citizens of Precinct H are to
report to their Safety Zones promptly. Thank you for your cooperation; the situation is under
control. As the announcement ends, several students scan the room; their eyes dart to the
teacher, and back to one another. They all have the same look on their face, and several
questions in their eyes. Safety Zone 3? Whats

going on? Riley ponders.

Students! Single file line! Mrs. Benson speaks loudly. She maneuvers to the front of the room,
and begins to the lead the students out of the class, and down the long, white halls. Riley is last
in line. Upon approaching the end of the hall, Mrs. Benson begins scurrying classmates down
the stairs and into the basement where the safety zone is located. Riley glances at Mrs.
Benson; the teachers eyes dart from the window to the basement frantically, but she still
manages a reassuring smile. Riley reaches the foot of the stair when murmur and shuffling
behind her break the silence. Riley turns around to find a small group of students; their eyes are
glued to the window. After navigating through the crowd, Rileys eyes travel to where all the
pointing fingers lead; a tall, disheveled looking man stands on top of the bordering wall that
segregates Precinct H from Precinct F. He wears a long white gown, accompanied by a bracelet
around his right wrist. Rileys heart pounds hard against her chest as though its knocking for
permission to leave, and run to a safe haven. Then the man speaks. Silent words exiting his
lungs, and dispersing into the air, never ever to be heard again. The words were a secret Riley
was unable to hear through the thick glass windows. Perhaps his words answered every
question and suspicion that haunted Riley since Day One. Then, the man does a remarkable
thing: he smiles. The twist in his smile matches the twirl in Rileys stomach, but still, she can't
turn away. A wave of triumph floods the mans face before he stretches his arms apart, closes
his eyes, and plummets to the concrete below.
Day Eleven (Night)
Some say he slipped, and that his death was an accident. Most say that he was executed,
gunned down by the Officers before he could put Precinct H in danger. But Riley knew the truth.
She felt as though she was the only one who hadnt blinked in that moment, the only person
who hadnt missed a single beat of his
heart. T
hump, thump thump thu-. Then red. His white

gown painted in the color

of the sun as it descends- slowly, slowly- behind the horizon. Riley

wished that all the colors were dim liked Micah saw them.
