    A SMALL PAIN IN MY CHEST

    I] THE POEM IS ANTI-WAR. WARS


    LEAVE PHYSICAL & MENTAL SCARS
    THAT HAVNT SURVIVORS &
    .. INVOLVED IN BATTLES.
    IT HIGHLIGHTS THE PHYSICAL &
    PSYCOLOGICAL AGONY OF
    SOLDIERS BESIDES THE
    EMOTIONAL PAIN.
    THESE MEN FACE TERRIBLE
    CONDITIONS ON THE WARFRONT
    WITHOUT FOOD, WATER & REST
    FOR DAYS.THERE IS A FEAR THAT
    THEY MAY NEVER UNITE WITH
    THEIR FAMILIES LONLINESS &
    HOMESICKNESS & FACED
    EVERYDAY.THE FAMILIES OF THE
    SOLDIERS TOO LIVE IN THE HOPE
    THAT THEIR LOVED ONES ARE
    SAFE.
    THE NARRATOR .
    .. A SOLDIER SITTING
    PEACEFULLY & CALMLY UNDER A
    TREE. AS THE NARRATOR WALKED
    TOWARDS HIM, THE SOLDIER
    BECKONED TO HIM. IN THE LIGHT
    OF THE DAWN, THE NARRATOR
    SAW A NUMBER OF SOLDIERS
    LYING DEAD ON THE BATTLEFIELD.
    THEY HAD FOUGHT A LONG &
    DIFFICULT BATTLE ALL NIGHT &
    DIED FIGHTING.
    THE SOLDIER WAS TRYING TO
    SMILE, HIDING HIS PAIN & ASKING
    FOR HELP. HE WANTED A SIP OF
    WATER. HE COMPLAINED OF A
    SMALL PAIN IN THE CHEST WHICH
    WOULD EASE WITH A SIP OF
    WATER.
    THERE WAS A LARGE REDDISHBROWN STAIN OF BLOOD ON THE
    SOLDIERS SHIRTA MIXTURE OF
    BLOOD & DIRT. ASIAN DIRT
    REFERS TO THE SOIL OF VIETNAM
    WHERE AMERICA FOUGHT A LONG
    WAR TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF

    COMMUNISM. THE SOLDIER TELLS


    THE NARRATOR THAT HE IS
    LUCKIER THAN HIS FELLOW
    SOLDIERS AS THEY DIED BUT HE
    SURVIVED WITH ONLY A SMALL
    PAIN IN HIS CHEST.

    II] THE SOLDIER SMILES WEAKLY,


    FEELS HE IS GETTING OLD.
    INSPITE OF THE SUNSHINE HE IS
    FEELING COLD.HE SAYS THAT A
    TROOP OF 200 SOLDIERS WAS
    CLIMBING THE HILLWHEN THERE
    WAS AN EXPLOSION AT THE TOP &
    HE COULD FEEL THE PAIN IN HIS
    CHESTHE SUFFERED AN INJURY
    IN THE EXPLOSION
    HE TELLS THE NARRATOR HE
    TRIED TO GET HELP BUT FOUND
    BIG CRATERS IN THE EARTH &
    DEAD BODIES .. AROUND.
    HE WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTINUE
    FIRING AT HIS ENEMY DUE TO THE
    PAIN & FINALLY GAVE UP & SAT
    DOWN.
    HE EXPRESSED GRATITUDE TO THE
    NARRATOR FOR GIVING HIM HIS
    CANTEEN. HE SMILES AT THE
    NARRATOR WHO TELLS IT IS THE
    BRIGHTEST SMILE HE HAS SEEN.
    THE SOLDIER THINKS ABOUT HIS
    FAMILYWONDERS WHAT HIS
    WIFE & MOTHER WOULD THINK OF
    HIM SITTING HELPLESSLY
    DEFEATED BY A PAIN (IT WAS A
    FOREIGN L& WHERE THE BATTLE
    WAS FOUGHT)
    THE SOLDIERS LIFE WAS EBBING,
    HIS SIGHT HAD BEGUN TO FADE,
    HE SAW DARKNESS EVERYWHERE,
    GRIMACING WITH PAIN, HE SAW
    THE SUN GROWING DIM &
    DARKNESS ENGULFED THE DAY.

    HE CANNOT GO FURTHER, HE
    WANTED TO NEST, SOONAFTER HE
    DOES QUITELY. THE FATAL
    WOUNDS MADE IT DIFFICULT FOR
    HIM TO GO ON, HE FAINTED,
    SEEING DARKNESS.

    EMBRACE, HE COULD FEEL THE


    WOUNDS PRESSED AGAINST EACH
    OTHER. THE LARGE PAIN IN HIS
    HEART & THE SOLDIERS LIFE
    COMING TO AN END.

    THE NARRATOR PUT HIS ARMS


    AROUND HIM,HELD HIM IN CLOSE
