Students in a 4th grade classroom will use their teacher's blog to access homework assignments, past work, upcoming projects, and provide feedback. Students will write a weekly 'Blog Letter Home' to reflect on what they learned that week from the lessons and share their perspective with parents. The goal is to better communicate classroom experiences and student progress to parents through an accessible online platform.

Name: Claire Seifter Directions: Using the template below, describe how students could use a blog, wiki, or other websitecreation tool to learn required learning standards in your content area: For an A grade provide an idea that reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember higher levels (4-6) require that students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order thinking; and use technology create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others beyond their school/classroom. The learning activities and products should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will view/use/benefit from students work. Review your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi. Grade Level: 4th Content Area: All Technology Used (check all that apply): Blog Wiki Other Website Creation Tool (list): Edublog Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: Covers all standards and content areas Brief Description of Learning Experience: The students main use of the classroom blog will be for reference purposes. I plan to incorporate a Flipped Classroom component to our lessons to provide students with additional practice and support. Students can access the blog to see homework assignments, past homework assignments, upcoming projects, and they will be able to provide feedback in the comment sections. Approval of comments from the teacher will be required before the comments are posted to the public. Photos or videos of completed projects will be published on the blog for parents to access. Every Friday, students will reflect on what they have learned from the weeks lessons by submitting a post titled, Blog Letter Home. This is to provide parents with an insight of the weeks teachings from the students perspective. They will have access to view the teachers postings of the weeks lessons, and then compare it to what the students have blogged about learning. Students will write their Blog Letter Home each Friday. Time will be allotted to complete this assignment at the end of Friday each week. Student Engagement/Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi):
Students will be able to communicate, review, understand, and post their own products using their teachers class blog. They will reach a high level of learning because they will reflect on the weekly lessons by publishing their Blog Letter Home blog post. Students will reach a LoTi level 5 because they are publishing a product that extends beyond the classroom. Importance of technology: Web-creation tools allow for communication that is prompt and accessible. Parents are able to see exactly what their children are producing in a classroom when teachers post photos and videos of the finished products on the blog. Homework, projects, and important information can be instantly submitted for viewing. Computer, hand-held device, and internet access is required for parents, students, and teachers to connect via a class blog. Without these forms of technology, communication would be less efficient among parents and teachers.

Inspiration (optional): My collaborating teacher for my ECE 4403 course has her students write a Letter Home each week. This is the same concept as Blog Letter Home except the students in her class write the letter, not post on the class blog. Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Each parent/caregiver will be required to sign a consent form stating their child is allowed to view the blog and participate in the activities on the blog. A monitored comments setting will be set into place in order for me to personally review each comment before allowing it to be posted to the public. Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. What are you trying that you have not tried before? What do you hope to learn from this activity? How do you hope it will help students learn? I hope students and parents will be able to openly discuss material that has been taught in class. Often, students experiences and lives within the classroom cannot be fully expressed to their parents very detailed. A class blog and a Blog Letter Home will hopefully help inform the parents of the progress their child is making in their education and give a better idea of what their child does on a day-to-day basis.
