Fall Workshop Recap

Casting Hands

2016

Presented by Kyle Phelps

Kyle Phelps, a Professor at the University of Dayton,
lead a very HANDSON casting workshop at UD, September 17th. We were fortunate to be coached by such
an accomplished artist who has exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally. Kyle gave our group the
opportunity to participate in every step of the casting
process. We soon discovered how important it was to
work as a team. Kyle motivated and kept us moving as we mixed, splattered, chiseled, hammered and uncovered a casting process that is incredible!!! Just like Kyle,
incredible!

Greetings From Our Regional Director

Dear Western Region members
As I write this, we have officially passed the first day of Fall! I have been thrilled with
the warm weather and the cool mornings. Yet I know that this shift in the weather
also signals a shift into what often feels like the busiest time of year. For me, that includes Conference MODE! I hope you are planning to join us in Cincinnati, OH between November 3-5, 2016 for the OAEA Annual Conference. This year, the theme is
Full STEAM ahead!
The conference committee have worked hard all summer to bring together a wonderful
line up of workshops, presenters, key note speakers, and fun off site events for us.
Darden Bradshaw
This is a great opportunity to refill your bucketyou know, the one that you have been
dipping out of as you give and do for everyone around you.
Thursday, November 3 we will have our regional meeting. We will have a lovely plated lunch and
time to visit with each other. And we have a lot of business to discuss, including nominations for the 2017
Outstanding Art Teachers (we get to award two), our Division awardee nominees, and Service award nominees. Feel free to send nominations ahead of time to me at [email protected] Remember that our bylaws state that if you are not present at the meeting you cannot vote, so come make your voice heard! Also
we will be handing out the most creative Steam-punk Western region pins EVER created by RD Elect
Megan Newton and her Advanced 8th grade art students!
And Thursday evening is the awards night! We will celebrate the incredible contributions of our
OATs Ben Davis and Holly Johnson, our division awardees Julia Lindsay (Retired Division Award Winner)
and Kate Brookshire (Middle Division Award Winner). So dont forget your turquoise and black as you
dress to impress! There will be an opportunity to gather prior to the awards dinnerspecifics will be
shared at the regional lunch meeting so do come join us!
Friday, November 4 will be filled with great workshops and presentations. That evening, we will
STEAM-Punk our way into Cincinnati and show them how classy art teachers from Western Ohio can be! I
dont know about you, but I cant wait to see everyones get-up!
Conference concludes on Saturday, November 5 with division meetings in the morning and a final
keynote at lunch. It will be a fun, jam-packed weekend that will get you steamed up for all that lies ahead

Brew-Ha Event Recap

Summer 2016

"On August 3rd WOAEA members met

at the Lucky Star Brewery in Miamisburg to share multi age lesson plans and
local brews.
There were five presenters representing
all age ranges including a presentation
from Cornell Clay Supply. Each presenter shared their lesson plan for fifteen
minutes to a small group of attendees.
Then, the buzzer rang and everyone
shifted to a new presenter. By the end of the event, our
members left with five different lesson plans!
Ben Davis, 2016 OAT, shared with us an elementary lesson about identity using paper collage. Holly Johnson, 2016 OAT, demonstrated how she uses
clay with her elementary classes to make cupcakes. Sue Ayers presented on inside VS. Outside boxes using
light. Cathy Sweny showed us how to incorporate radial design into our middle school classrooms. Finally,
Erin from Cornell showed us some ground breaking clay techniques that banishes our ideas of scoring and
slipping clay.
All attendees left with numerous lesson plans and a new invigoration for the upcoming school year!
We look forward to doing this type of event again and would love it if you could join us! Stay tuned for the
next Brew-Ha event next summer!"

Summer Field Trip

"This past August, WOAEA members took an "art field trip" to
the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Museum to see the work of internationally known artist, Do Ho Suh. Seeing his work in person is crucial in understanding
his idea of Place. All members
were truly speechless after seeing his work!
We will be taking more "art
field trips" coming up in 2017.
Please join us on our adventures as we explore different
art museums in Ohio! "

Rules for submitting artwork to the YAM and YPAE exhibitions

Matting Requirements:
1. All works must be matted with a good quality mat board or pebble board. Do not use thin papers or
poster board for matting.
2. Minimum mat width is to be 3 inches all the way around. This helps to accommodate the labels that
we need to put on the art. Relief work must be matted and may not be more than 2 inches in depth.
3. Maximum OUTSIDE EDGE mat size is 24 X 30 inches.
4. YAM show will accept 3-D works only if it is clearly marked and ready to be displayed.
5. All work is to be backed with foam core board or double thickness cardboard to prevent
warping during shrink-wrapping.
6. The backing needs to touch the edges of the matte board due to the shrink wrapping. If the backing
does not meet the ends of the matte board then it buckles due to the shrink wrapping.
7. Do not frame the artworks. No framed entries will be accepted.
Identification of Pieces:
1. Each artwork must have an entry form neatly and legibly completed and taped to the back of the
piece.
2. Attach the top half of entry form to back of art with top. LEAVE BOTTOM HALF HANGING
FREELY.
3. Mark the TOP of the artwork by writing TOP. This ensures that it will be displayed properly.
4. Include your name, region, school and students name on the back of the artwork, incase the form
falls off or is damaged.
Other Info:
1. Any work that can smear and cause damage to other mats needs to be sprayed and wrapped in
newsprint, etc for transport.
2. Work should be from only one student, no group entries.
3. Works may be rejected at the state level because of messy mats, etc. Art teachers may receive a bill if
submitted work has to be re-matted.
4. Students whose work is selected for the show will be mailed a congratulations letter, info and
invitation for the recognition ceremony. The students teacher will also be notified via letter to
attend.
5. The reception for both YAM and YPAE is in late March. The reception date and times will be in the
letters to students and teachers which are usually mailed in mid-February.
Questions? Please contact Megan Newton at [email protected]
