This Paper Contains: 8 pages (including title page)
Time allowed: 2 hours 10 minutes
INSTRUCTIONS:
Candidates should attempt all 4 questions.
Candidates are permitted to bring any unit-related material into the exam.
PLEASE NOTE
Examination candidates may only bring authorised materials into the examination room. If a supervisor
finds, during the examination, that you have unauthorised material, in whatever form, in the vicinity of your
desk or on your person, whether in the examination room or the toilets or en route to/from the toilets, the
matter will be reported to the head of school and disciplinary action will normally be taken against you. This
action may result in your being deprived of any credit for this examination or even, in some cases, for the
whole unit. This will apply regardless of whether the material has been used at the time it is found.
Therefore, any candidate who has brought any unauthorised material whatsoever into the examination room
should declare it to the supervisor immediately. Candidates who are uncertain whether any material is
authorised should ask the supervisor for clarification.

Applied Engineering Thermodynamics
Semester 1 exam 2015
o
1. Air at 101kPa, 33.5 C with a relative humidity of 90% enters an air conditioning unit.
The air is first cooled to condense out some of the water vapour, and is then heated
to 20oC, =30%. The volume flowrate of air delivered at the final condition is
0.01m3/s. State any assumptions that you make.
(a) Find the temperature to which the air is initially cooled;
(b) Find the mass of water condensed per kg of dry air;
(c) Assuming that the water leaves the unit at the minimum temperature, find the
net heat transfer rate from the unit.
2. A commercial freezer uses R134a and maintains a cabinet temperature of -20oC in an
ambient temperature of 35oC. The evaporator and condenser require temperature
o
o
differences of 6 and 5 to operate effectively. Refrigerant leaves the condenser
subcooled by 2o, and enters the compressor with 6o of superheat. You should not
need to interpolate from the refrigerant tables, but should note where values do not
align exactly. The refrigerant flowrate is 15g/s.
(a) Sketch annotated T-s and P-h diagrams for the system.
(b) If the compressor has an isentropic efficiency of 80%, calculate the work done per
kg of refrigerant.
(c) If the electric motor running the compressor has an efficiency of 95%, calculate
the CoP of the system based on the true electrical energy input.
3. The Wrtsil 12V26 4-stroke marine diesel engine is a medium-speed turbocharged
12-cylinder engine with a swept volume of 17litres/cylinder. At its maximum
continuous rating (MCR), the engine produces 4080kW at 1000 rpm at a specific fuel
consumption of 190g/kWh. It burns fuel oil with a calorific value of 42.7MJ/kg. At
standard ISO test conditions (25oC, 100kPa) the engine takes in 8.1kg/s of ambient air.
(a) Calculate the Air-Fuel ratio;
(b) Calculate the Brake Thermal Efficiency and the BMEP;
(c) Calculate the volumetric efficiency based on ambient ISO standard conditions.
4. The Alstom GT13E2 gas turbine uses natural gas to produce 202.7MW at a thermal
efficiency of 38%. Air enters the compressor at 15oC, 100kPa, and is compressed to
o
1.5Mpa. The exhaust gas leaves at a rate of 624kg/s with a temperature of 501 C.
The fuel used is natural gas with a calorific value of 46MJ/kg. Using air-standard cycle
assumptions (Cp=1.005 kJ/kgK, and =1.4), calculate:
(a) The compressor delivery temperature if c=91.5%;
(b) The maximum temperature in the cycle;
(c) The turbine efficiency.
(d) Treating the fuel as methane (CH4, M=16kg/kmol), write the full combustion
equation at the actual AFR.
