Introduction

The Taj Mahal or crown of palaces is a white marble mausoleum which is

located on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in the Indian city of Agra. It
was built in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (reigned 1628-1658) to be
the final resting place of her second wife Arjumand Banu Begum, who is also
known as Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal is widely considered as one of the most
beautiful buildings ever made. The exquisite marble structure is an eternal
testament to the artistic and scientific accomplishments of a wealthy empire.

Shah Jahan, the King of the World, took control of the Mughal Empire
throne in 1628 is in so much love with the queen he describes as Mumtaz Mahal
or Chosen One of the Palace. There is a poets at Agras Mughal court said her
beauty was such that the moon hid its face in shame before her. It is also said
that Mumtaz Mahal bound Shah Jahan with a deathbed promise to build her the
most beautiful tomb ever in her last moment of life in 1631 which is death
because of childbirth. It is shown how much he love her as he built it with his
passion and wealth into the creation of just such monument.

It is said that 20,000 stone carvers, masons, and artists from across India
and as far as Turkey and Iraq were employed under a team of architects to build
the Taj Mahal in the lush gardens on the banks of Agras Jamuna River. They
completed the task between 1631 to 1648. The Taj Mahal incorporates and
expands on design with the tradition of Persian and earlier Mughal architecture.
Specific inspiration came from the culture of successful Timurid and Mughal
buildings including the Gur-e Amir, which is the tomb of Timur, progenitor of the
Mughal dynasty in Samarkand, Humayuns Tomb, Itmad-Ud-Daulahs Tomb and
Shah Jahans own Jama Masjid which located in Delhi.

While most of the earlier Mughal buildings were primarily constructed of

red sandstone, Shah Jahan promoted the use of white marble inlaid with gem
stones. Buildings under his patronage has reached new levels of refinement.
These buildings is built within lush gardens, complete with an enormous pool

reflecting pool that regularly does what no human has ever been able to
accomplish. Which is, duplicate the beauty of the Taj Mahal.

While the arch-and-dome profile of clean white marble has become iconic,
other beauties lie in the Taj Mahals painstaking details: inlaid semiprecious
stones and carvings and Al-Quran verse in calligraphy create an enchanting
interior space where Shah Jahan came to visit his wifes remains before he was
eventually buried at her side. It is said that the estimates of the cost of
construction vary due to the difficulties in estimating costs across time. The total
cost has been estimated to be about 32 million Indian rupees, which is around
52.6 billion Indian rupees (827 million usd) based on 2015 values.
