Exam03 FS2016v2 Solution

This document is an exam for Physics 2750 taken in the fall of 2016. It contains 4 multi-part physics problems testing concepts like linear and angular acceleration, momentum, kinetic energy, springs and harmonic motion. The exam instructs students to show their work, box their final answers with units, and not get hung up on any single question. It reminds students to ask the instructor if they have any questions.

This is a closed book exam. I understand, pursuant to University Regulations
on academic honesty, that I am not to use any notes or information other
than what is in the official, non-annotated formula sheet.

Signature_______________________________________
For full credit clearly and neatly show your work. Write the equation used to start to solve the problem and
show your math flowing from it for full credit. No shown work, no credit!
Surround your final answer with a box and make sure you include units for your final answer, otherwise
you will be penalized!
Dont get hung up on questions. If you find yourself spending too much time on a question, skip it and come
back to it later. Relax, read carefully, think and then read everything again.
During the exam, if you have questions please raise your hand and the instructor will come to you and
provide help. Do not leave your seat.

1. A string is wrapped several times around the rim of a small hoop with radius
8.0 cm and mass 0.5 kg. The free end of the string is held in place and the
hoop is released from rest. The moment of inertia for the hoop is MR2.
a) Find the linear acceleration of the hoop. (5 points)

b) Calculate the linear speed of the hoop after it has descended 45.0 cm. (5 points)

2. A projectile of mass m = 0.2 kg moves to the right with speed v = 5 m/s. The projectile strikes and sticks to
the end of a stationary rod of mass M = 1.2 kg and length d = 2.4 m that is pivoted about a frictionless axle
through its center. The moment of inertia for the rod is ML2/12.
a) Find the angular momentum of the projectile just
before the collision. (2 points)

b) Find the angular speed of the system right after the collision. (4 points)

c) Determine the change in kinetic energy due to the collision. (4 points)

3. A uniform beam of weight 100 N and height 2.4 m is held in a vertical position by a pin at its lower end and a
cable at its upper end. A horizontal force acts in the middle of the beam as shown in the figure. The
magnitude of the applied force is F = 75 N.
a) Find the tension in the cable. (5 points)

b) What is the magnitude and direction of the force applied by the pin to the beam? (5 points)

4. A block of mass 2.0 kg is attached to one end an ideal spring with force constant 320 N/m and moves on a
horizontal frictionless table. The other end of the spring is attached to a wall. At t=0 the spring is neither
stretched nor compressed and the block is moving in the negative direction at a speed of 15 m/s.
a) Find the angular frequency of motion. (1 point)

b) Find the initial phase angle and the amplitude of motion. (4 points)

c) Write the equation for the position as a function of time using the values from the problem. (1 point)

d) Find the speed of the block when it is at x = 0.3 cm from equilibrium. (4 points)
