Reaction: The is not anything to do with the article, but instead something that I
wanted to comment on regarding the Near Pod presentation that broke down and
compared the racial demographic break down of school disciplinary actions. There
was a section on suspensions by disability, and for whatever reason there was an
insanely large amount of students who were of mixed ethnicity who received
suspensions while being disabled. I struggled for some time to brainstorm a reason,
but Ive got nothing. I wonder why that specific stat is so massive. I couldnt come
up with anything to justify it or any rationale.
Connection: It makes sense that the same demographic of person who gets
punished in high school would be incarcerated in prison. Considering that the main
contributing factor is society as a whole, so if nothing changes than obviously the
pattern will stay the same.
Thought: Its so weird to me how the education system is looked at and often
blamed for societal trends that result in specific racial demographics of people who
end up in prison. Of course schools are a part of it, but I feel like they get more
blame than is necessary and that businesses and marketing, media, politics,
everything plays a role in this type of pattern.
Application: Dont punish kids. Try every method you can before you discipline
them and if you do end up needing to discipline them, make sure that they are
actually getting something or learning something from their punishment rather than
giving them a vacation.
Reaction: I like how they made a point in the article to show the aftershock of the
rest of the class if someone is disciplined or punished in the classroom. If a student
is removed it does not necessarily mean that the learning environment is all of the
sudden peachy keen.
