Core Balance CT

The Core Balance Current Transformer (CBCT), also known as a zero sequence current transformer, is used for earth fault protection in three phase systems. It works by having the three phase conductors pass through its core, so the magnetic fluxes from the three phases cancel out under normal conditions and no current is induced in the secondary. However, when an earth fault occurs, the zero sequence fault current is not cancelled out and induces a current in the secondary. This secondary current is then fed to an earth fault relay which can generate a tripping signal if the current exceeds a threshold.

Core balance CT (CBCT): The CBCT, also known as a zero sequence CT, is used for

earth leakage and earth fault protection. The concept is similar to the RVT. In the CBCT,
the three core cable or three single cores of a three phase system pass through the inner
diameter of the CT. When the system is fault free, no current flows in the secondary of
the CBCT. When there is an earth fault, the residual current (zero phase sequence
current) of the system flows through the secondary of the CBCT and this operates the
relay. In order to design the CBCT, the inner diameter of the CT, the relay type, the relay
setting and the primary operating current need to be furnished.
CBCT:ELR Earth Leakage Relays along with CBCT are used to detect
leakage current in the earhing. If the earthing is not
proper a small amount of current will appear (in the order
of mA). ELR will continuously monitor the leakage current
if it exceeds the set threshold an output electromechanical
relay (which is inside the ELR) will operate. The output
relay contact can be connected to circuite breakers /
contactor to isolate power supply or alarms.
CBCT Core Balance Current Transformers these will come in
different sizes. the core material will be either nickel or
alloy of nickel, copper wire will be wounded on the core
and properly insulated. The 3-phase line along with neutral
are passed in this core and secondary is connected to ELR.
Idealy the leakage current should be zero if any earth
leakage happen the leakage current will appear at CBCT
secondary it will be detected by ELR.

Core Balance Current Transformers

The CBCT or the Core Balance Current Transformer is a current transformer is used for
earth fault protection in grounded three phase systems. It is also known as the zerosequence current transformer. The CBCT is a current transformer through all the three
phases are made to pass as in the diagram. Thus the magnetic fluxes caused by the three

phase currents cancel each other.

The net resultant flux being zero does not induce any current in the secondary of the
transformer. Thus the secondary current of the CBCT when all the three phases are healthy
is zero.

When an earth fault occurs in one of the phases, the zero-sequence fault current which flows
is not cancelled by the flux of the other two phases and hence induces a current in the
secondary.

The CBCT can be connected to an earth fault relay which can be used to generate the
tripping signal.
