RAILTEL CORPORATION OF INDIA LTD.

RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. is a Miniratna enterprise of Government of India


focusing on providing broadband and VPN services. RailTel was formed in September
2000 with the objective of creating nationwide broadband, telecom and multimedia
network, to modernize Train Control Operation and Safety System of Indian Railways.
RailTel's network passes through around 5,000 stations across the country, covering all
central business districts, towns, cities, mini/major-metros.
RailTel has created state of the art multimedia telecom network using SDH/DWDMbased transmission systems and high end routers for MPLS-IP network. Indian Railways
have seamless right-of-way along 63,000 km of rail tracks passing through 7000 stations
across the country. The stations in major cities are located in central business districts.
Indian Railways already had established a strong Telecom Network to meet its
communication requirements. With the formation of Corporation, Indian Railways' rightof-way and OFC assets have been transferred to RailTel. About 32500 km of OFC has
been laid and over 29500 km has been commissioned. Works on another 10620 km are in
various stage of completion.

RailTel, in collaboration with Google, provides free WiFi access at select railways
stations across India. Google chose railways stations as the location to provide free WiFi
because stations have access to reliable power supply, fiber provided by RailTel, and the
passengers at a station come from all demographics of India.
The free WiFi service was launched at Mumbai Central railway station in January
2016. In April 2016, the service was expanded to 9 more railway stations.[11] In June
2016, Google announced that free Wi-Fi was available across 19 stations in India and was

being used by over 1.5 million people. Google and RailTel plan to provide free WiFi at
100 railway stations across the country by the end of 2016.

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) was incorporated on

SPLICING MACHINES
Fusion splicing is the act of joining two optical HYPERLINK

fuse the two fibers together in such a way that light passing through the fibers is
not scattered or reflected back by the splice, and so that the splice and the region
surrounding it are almost as strong as the virgin fiber itself. The source of heat is usually
an electric arc, but can also be a laser, or a gas flame, or a tungsten filament through
which current is passed.

Process
The process of fusion splicing normally involves using localized heat to melt or fuse the
ends of two optical fibers together. The splicing process begins by preparing each fiber
end for fusion.

Stripping the fiber


Stripping is the act of removing the protective polymer coating around optical fiber in
preparation for fusion splicing. The splicing process begins by preparing both fiber ends
for fusion, which requires that all protective coating is removed or stripped from the ends
of each fiber.

Cleaning the fiber


The customary means to clean bare fibers is with alcohol and wipes. However, high
purity isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is hygroscopic: it attracts moisture to itself. This is
problematic as IPA is either procured in pre-saturated wiper format or in (host) containers

to smaller more usable containers.

Cleaving the fiber


The fiber is then cleaved using the score-and-break method so that its end-face is

Current fusion splicers are either core or cladding alignment. Using one of these methods
the two cleaved fibers are automatically aligned by the fusion splicer[1] in the x,y,z plane,
then are fused together. Prior removing the spliced fiber from the fusion splicer, a prooftest performed to ensure that the splice is strong enough to survive handling, packaging
and extended use.

OPTICAL TIME DOMAIN REFLECTOR


An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) is an optoelectronic instrument used to

An OTDR is the optical equivalent of an electronic time domain HYPERLINK
"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_domain_reflectometer"reflectometer. It injects a
series of optical pulses into the fiber under test and extracts, from the same end of the
fiber, light that is scattered (Rayleigh backscatter) or reflected back from points along the
fiber. The scattered or reflected light that is gathered back is used to characterize the
optical fiber. This is equivalent to the way that an electronic time-domain meter measures
reflections caused by changes in theimpedance of the cable under test. The strength of the
return pulses is measured and integrated as a function of time, and plotted as a function of
fiber length.

Reliability and quality of OTDR equipment


The reliability and quality of an OTDR is based on its accuracy, measurement range,
ability to resolve and measure closely spaced events, measurement speed, and ability to
perform satisfactorily under various environmental extremes and after various types of
physical abuse. The instrument is also judged on the basis of its cost, features provided,
size, weight, and ease of use.
Some of the terms often used in specifying the quality of an OTDR are as follows:
Accuracy: Defined as the correctness of the measurement i.e., the difference between the
measured value and the true value of the event being measured.
Measurement range: Defined as the maximum attenuation that can be placed between
the instrument and the event being measured, for which the instrument will still be able to
measure the event within acceptable accuracy limits.
Instrument resolution: Is a measure of how close two events can be spaced and still be
recognized as two separate events. The duration of the measurement pulse and the data
sampling interval create a resolution limitation for OTDRs. The shorter the pulse duration
and the shorter the data sampling interval, the better the instrument resolution, but the
shorter the measurement range.
CABLE TRACER/LOCATOR

A cable tester is an electronic device used to verify the electrical connections in a cable
or other wired assembly. Generally a cable tester consists of:

A source of electric current,

A volt meter,

A switching matrix used to connect the current source and the voltmeter to all of
the contact points in a cable.

In addition to these parts a cable tester may also have a microcontroller and a display to
automate the testing process and show the testing results.

A cable tester is used to verify that all of the intended connections exist and that there are
no unintended connections in the cable being tested. When an intended connection is
missing it is said to be "open". When an unintended connection exists it is said to be a
"short" (a short circuit). If a connection "goes to the wrong place" it is said to be
"miswired" (the connection has two faults: it is open to the correct contact and shorted to
an incorrect contact).
Generally, the testing is done in two phases. The first phase, called the "opens test" makes

sure each of the intended connections is good. The second phase, called the "shorts test"
makes sure there are no unintended connections.

A popular design has the tester combined with a standard flashlight. A phone
connector or jack plug in the rear of the unit permits a set of test leads to be plugged in
effecting a quick conversion between the two applications.
For situations where continuity testing must be done on high resistance circuits, or where
delicate conductors and sensitive components that might be damaged by excessive

watch batteries to drive anLED as an indicator. These testers can be exquisitely sensitive;
for example they will indicate if the test points are taken by both hands.
DUCT TRACER
The SONDE operating at 512Hz is attached to the CTRAK Traceable Duct rodder unit &
is pushed inside the non metallic HDPE Conduit or any other line until it stops due to
blockage in HDPE pipe or because of entry into next manhole. The CTRAK contains a 1
sq mm tracer which is energized by the Line excitor at 8/16/32 or 64kHz. The digital
receiver is then set to receive frequencies at 8/16/32 or 64kHz to trace direction and route
of line in the Line Tracing Mode. Once the trace is completed until the line trace starts to
fade, the receiver setting is changed to the Sonde Tracing Mode to receive 512Hz
frequency transmitted by the SONDE or any other customized frequency which can then
be used to pin point exact point of blockage in HDPE conduit or manhole location.

INSTALLATION
Step 1 : Attach sonde to front of the rod. Insert rod into manhole and push into metallic or
non metallic pipe/duct which is to be route traced.
Step 2 : The terminal block of the CTRAK provides the connection to the inbuilt copper
trace wire of the duct rodder

Step 3 : Energise the traceable duct rodder with any frequency such as 8/16/33/64/65/133
KHz etc using any signal excitor/ transmitter
Step 4 : Trace route & depth of buried duct in line tracing mode and blockage points of
underground conduit in sonde mode using digital receiver.

GENERATOR SET

The Telecommunications market has revolutionized our ability to communicate, both in


business and personally. Mobile devices are becoming our preferred method of
communicating with each other. Mobile devices rely on a network of cell towers that
track the users as they move from the transmission range of one tower to another. A
telecommunication network relies on a network of cell towers. Many tower sites are fitted
with a standby, or prime power generator to ensure power during a utility outage. This
Information Sheet discusses the characteristics of Cell Tower loads, and how they
influence the specification of a generator set being used on a cell tower, in both a standby
and primary power application.

Generator Arrangement:
Cell tower sites typically are supplied to the following arrangement:
Canopy - Sites with modules too small to accommodate the generator are fitted with
enclosed generators sets.
Set enclosures - The specifying engineer will have to consider noise codes acceptable in
urban areas. Normally a weather protective enclosure is acceptable but in some urban
areas the enclosure will have to be sound attenuated. If the site is remote considerations
should be given to a winterization package including motorized louvers, and snow hoods.
Foot Print - In urban areas where land values are high, the smallest footprint is
recommended.
Sub-Base - Most generator sets are fitted on a sub base with vibration isolators between
the generator assembly and base. Extra vibration isolation may be required in sensitive
areas, such as hospital installations. 8.0 Electrical Loads to be Considered: The generator
end of a generator set in a Cell Tower application should be specified to consider the
following:
Starting Loads - Starting electric motors can produce high starting skVAs. The system
engineer will have to calculate if the generator AVR should be a PMG (Permanent
Magnet Generator) to absorb voltage drop caused by motor loads.

EQUIPMENTS FOR DIGGING TRENCHES


A trencher is a piece of construction equipment used to dig trenches, especially for
laying pipes or cables, for installing drainage, or in preparation for trench warfare.
Trenchers may range in size from walk-behind models, to attachments for a skid
loader or tractor, to very heavy tracked heavy equipment.

Wheel Trencher

A wheel trencher or rockwheel is composed of a toothed metal wheel. It is cheaper to


operate and maintain than chain-type trenchers. It can work in hard or soft soils, either
homogeneous (compact rocks, silts, sands) or heterogeneous (split or broken rock,
alluvia, moraines). This is particularly true because a cutting wheel works by clearing the

to the presence of blocks in the soil.
Chain Trencher

A chain trencher cuts with a digging chain or belt that is driven around a rounded metal
frame, or boom. It resembles a giant chainsaw. This type of trencher can cut ground that
is too hard to cut with a bucket-type excavator, and can also cut narrow and deep
trenches. The angle of the boom can be adjusted to control the depth of the cut. To cut a
trench, the boom is held at a fixed angle while the machine creeps slowly.

Micro Trencher
A micro trencher is a "small rockwheel" specially designed for work in urban area. It is
fitted with a cutting wheel that cuts a microtrench with smaller dimensions than can be
achieved with conventional trench digging equipment.

Microtrench widths range from about 30 to 130 mm (1.2 to 5.1 in) with a depth of
500 mm (20 in) or less. These machines are sometimes radio-controlled.
With a micro trencher, the structure of the road is maintained and there is no associated
damage to the road. Owing to the reduced trench size, the volume of waste material
excavated is also reduced. Micro trenchers are used to minimize traffic or pedestrian
disturbance during network laying.
Portable Trencher
Landscapers and lawn care specialist may use a portable trencher to install landscape
edging and irrigation lines. These machines are lightweight (around 200 pounds) and are
easily maneuverable compared to other types of trenchers. The cutting implement may be
a chain or a blade similar to a rotary lawn mower blade oriented so that it rotates in a
vertical plane.
