Downtown business people are hoping for a good turn-out of concerned citizens & business owners at tomorrows
City Council Committee of the Whole
meeting. Council will be looking for
input regarding their newly-reinstated
pay in lieu of parking formula from the
2015 re-vamping of the zoning bylaw.
Business owners contend that the cost is
a hardship & parking isnt really an issue,
and real estate agents say many potential
sales have been lost due to the bylaw.
Meeting is tomorrow Thurs., Nov 3,
6pm, Council Chambers at City Hall.

1988 Quilchena Avenue, Merritt BC
Some say it was a happening, including pianist Bruce Vogt. Sitting down before a crowd of more than 150 people, he
helped realize what had only been a
dream for the 3 people who organized
the event. And so it began. It was May 5,
1981, in the MSS gym, and Evelyn Armstrong, Jennifer Tilley (now Trudeau) and
Wendy Wickwire had successfully organized their first concert for the community.
Although there was no concert hall or
concert piano, and not even a tradition or
network for organizing events such as
this, three or four people managed to
turn their dream into an event.
Not only was this event one of the
seeds from which the Nicola Valley Community Arts Council grew, it also heralded the beginning of the Nicola Valley
Grand Piano Fund.
The other seed was the Merritt Arts
Council, active in the mid-1970s. In early
1982, the NVCAC was formed with a 7member board: Evelyn Armstrong, Gary
Fast, Heather Aubert, Deanna Gage, Helen
Holmes, Jennifer Tilly & Fran White.
Gary Fast wrote for the paper at that
time, the newly formed Community
Arts Council is going to make a presentation to City Council asking for endorsement of their movement, their grand
piano fund, and plans to build a theatre
and a resource library. The Council also
hopes to install an exhibit centre at the library, and can do so if it can manage to
match a small grant from Victoria."
It is wonderful to note that the City
continues to support the NVCAC, as
does the BC Arts Council. It is also
spendid to see how many of the dreams
of those early directors have come to
fruition: the Concert Committee presented 3-7 performances per year for 32
years; the grand piano was purchased in
1992; our first plans for a theatre, created
by artist Doug Strand, were turned into
the Civic Centre; the Courthouse Art
Gallery was opened in 2005; we have an
Artists' resource library there; and now a
Theatre is in the works all visions of
that first Arts Council of 34 years ago!
Now there is also a website and Facebook page never dreamed of in 1981!
and the Culture Club for live performances by SaySo, a Live Theatre group,
and a legacy of workshops & art shows.
And 34 years later, NVCAC memberships are still only $10, and group memberships $25! Please support YOUR
community arts council and become a

Nature On Stage
My husband says I never listen to him. At least I think that's what he said.
Diapers After a young couple brought their new baby home, the wife suggested that
her husband should try his hand at changing diapers. "I'm busy," he said, "I'll do the
next one." The next time came around and she asked again. The husband looked
puzzled. "Oh! I didn't mean the next diaper. I meant the next baby."
If raising children was going to be easy, it never would have started with something called labour!
