Fantastic Result for Cancer Support

The amount raised at the Annual Macmillan Coffee

Morning held at the Village Hall on the 30th September,
yet again, surpassed all previous records. Chrissie
Warnes, chief organiser pictured left, writes:
On behalf of all the helpers, I would like to say a huge
thank you to all who have helped either by sewing, baking,
giving raffle, tombola or auction prizes, buying raffle tickets, donating and, most importantly, for coming along on
the day.
We are still quite in awe of the amazing sum of 9,004.54
Chrissie
which was raised. Thank you for the wonderful support
taking
we have received over the last 10 years. We are now just

Thank you also, Chrissie, for your massive contribution.
It wasnt just at the Village Hall that villagers were busy
collecting. The children at Great Massingham Primary School had a non-uniform
day and a cake stall. They raised 53 which they brought along to the hall during
the coffee morning to hand over to Chrissie. Many
thanks to the children and their parents.

Dance. Chief organiser, Mel Whitmore, writes:
A big thank you to everyone who supported the dinner
dance. We made a total of 1,100 for Macmillan and
Barclays Bank will also donate 1,000 to our total giving a grand total of 2,100.
Thanks to Charlie Figura, Zoie Whitmore and Julie
Mortars for all their help in organising a great night.
Thank you to everyone who donated prizes to make a
great raffle too. Thank you also, Mel.
These huge sums collected show what can be achieved
in a caring community where everyone pools their resources and works together. Well done to you all.

DOGGER MEN

Massinghams first Parish Register, listing baptisms, marriages

and deaths in the village was begun in the year 1598. The original document is now in the County Record Office in Norwich,
but Ant Robinson has a copy of it which he will happily lend to
anybody interested. Most of the register consists of lists of
names and dates but the first page is different. Originally left
blank, the Rector of the day (or possibly his Parish Clerk) used
the page to note down any interesting events and news items
that came his way. These are a mixture of national events such
as the Armada or the Gunpowder Plot, interspersed with local
news such as a fearfull earthquake that shook all of Norfolk,
or the casting of a new set of bells for the church tower in
1592. Most interesting of all is a tiny two-line entry dated
1599. Here it is in its original Elizabethan English:
The Island dodger men came in wel before midsomer, wel
fyshed, which time out of mind came not home before Lammas
or Bartholomew and after.
I spent a long time trying to puzzle out exactly what it meant.
Who on earth were these mysterious Dodger Men? And what
Island did they come from? Eventually, the penny dropped.
The Island was Iceland, and the men in question were not
Dodgers but Doggers, the captains and crews of sturdy, twinmasted square-rigged open boats used for cod fishing in Icelandic waters during late medieval and Tudor times. They
could carry up to ten men with a summers worth of provisions, and salt for preserving the catch. The dogger fleet left
England in February or March each year, heading for Icelandic
waters and, if the catch was good, would return in the early
autumn with as much as 30 tons of split and salted cod on
board. The dogger men were fearless seamen, who suffered
incredible hardships from ice-cold spray and cutting winds,
with almost no protection whatsoever. But the market had to be
satisfied. The dried and salted fish, an essential part of the Tudor diet, were loaded onto carts and sold from door to door in
October and November ready for the following Lent. If stored
carefully between layers of straw, the dried fish would keep for
up to two years. Here, in modern English, is what the Rectors
entry meant:
The Iceland dogger fishing fleet
came into port before the middle
of June with a huge catch of cod
when, for as long as people could
remember, they never normally
arrived home before Lammas(Aug 1st) or St. Bartholomews
day (August 24th).
It must have been a phenomenal catch!

Strollers Up, Down & Round to Harpley

Come and Help fill

Our September walk was a circular walk from

Massingham to Harpley, back to Harpley for
lunch and then back again to Massingham. Our
route took us up Mad Dog Lane but we saw
no Englishmen in the mid-day sun. We then
walked down Peddars Way to Cocky
Hoop. Here we took the path along the field
edge to Low Road. Having paused briefly for
refreshment we then climbed up the hill on
the other side. When we eventually got to the
top we paused to catch our breath and admire
the views. We followed the path down into
Harpley where three of us waited to be rescued. The fitter and more determined continued up the hill to Harpley Mill and then back
down to the Gate House, up again past the
turkey farm and finally down into Massingham. Whoever said that Norfolk is flat!
Eventually we all met up at the Rose and
Crown in Harpley where after a warm welcome
we enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch.
By the time you read this we will have completed our October stroll.
Our next walk, however, takes place on
Sunday 20th November, route and venue to
be decided.

The Coronation Club would like to say

a huge thank you to the youth club who
put on a wonderful tea for them.
We were spoilt by being served at the

It was really enjoyable and was rather
special for the young to mix with the
older members of the village. Well done

Village Hall Refurbishment Update

Members of the Village Hall Refurbishment
Committee met with our professional advisor, Christian Mountney and Sue Nash,
Vice-Chair of the Parish Council, at the
end of September, to open the tender documents submitted by three building firms
that had provided quotes.
The three quotations posed some difficult
challenges for us which are forcing us to
consider ways of modifying the specification or staging the work to make it more
likely to attract sufficient funding.
This will give our committee quite a bit of
work to do over the next month or so.

Parish Council Report October meeting
Nine councillors attended the meeting. Also
present was the Clerk, Tim Tilbrook (Borough
Councillor) and six parishioners.
Mr. John Lefever, Regional Head of Development for Hastoe Housing Association,
had previously advised the Parish Council
that he had been contacted by a local landowner to consider the possibility of building
a small number of houses on his land. He
had asked if these could be delivered as a
rural exception site so that the properties
could be let to local people. It was mentioned that the parish also has one third of
its current site available. The policy is to
identify the best site available to fulfil the
local need and it was stressed that a public
meeting is always held before an application is submitted to the planners.
Details of the Mike Tilbury Award have
been finalised and nomination forms are
available from the shop, the village hall and
in the Mallard.
The Precept requirement will be finalised at
the next meeting but, in the meantime,

members will consider any anticipated

items of expenditure for the year to 31st
March 2018.
The PCSO had visited the village to look
at parking issues. (Please see note below)
Next meeting, Village Hall,
Monday 21st November at 7.30 pm

Inconsiderate Parking

Residents have expressed their concern

recently about inconsiderate parking such
as parking on pavements forcing those
with wheelchairs or push chairs to endanger themselves by going on the road, parking close to a junction and causing problems for drivers exiting the junction and
not having a clear view and parking on
bends.
The PCSO has been placing notices on
cars parked illegally/inconsiderately.
Hopefully these notices will have the desired effect without recourse to the police
being involved and fines being imposed.

Fakenham Christmas Tree Festival

at Fakenham Parish Church
Thurs 1st 8th December: 10am 8pm
Sunday: 12.00 noon 8pm
This popular event is celebrating its 16th year and last year raised almost 18,000 for
charities, mostly in small coins! So, why not have a rummage down the back of your
sofa, maybe empty an old purse and bring that bag of coins to place in the charity buckets of your choice this really is something for the whole family and admission is
FREE!
All ages are welcome, with disabled access throughout the church, toilet provision and a
baby changing unit.
This year there will be a new charity tree for the Epilepsy Society which has been kindly
decorated by crafty Massingham gals! Therefore, if you do get the chance to visit this
wonderful event, we would be most grateful if you could save a few coins for our tree!
We are No. 46 on the map, located to the right of the nave altar.
There will be a Christmas Bazaar selling a wide range of Christmas goodies, refreshments with scrummy home-made cakes, a Tombola and Grand Prize Draw.
Please come along, enjoy the magical atmosphere and get into the Christmas spirit .
Many thanks. Ali Ward & Penny Thornton

Message To All Parishioners

T A

Advent, the star t of the new Chur ch Year , when we begin to look for war d
O of Jesus
LL at ARISHIONERS
to the birth
Christmas (ten weeks away as I write) falls in November, towards the end of the calendar year. Endings and new beginnings: our
life consists of these, rolling out across the years. We like to mark such landmark occasions, pivots on which we hang our lives. We aspire to look forward in hope,
although this can sometimes be quite a challenge - when life surprises or overwhelms
us; and politically, due to Brexit, we could not live in more uncertain, uncharted times.
However, the time around Remembrance Sunday (13 th November) is familiar territory,
when we look back at our nations history in respect and gratitude, remembering the
courage of the past and the heroes who have given us the freedoms we continue to be
thankful for to this day. We live in a world of tremendous upheaval and darkness; never
has the inextinguishable light of the Christ-child - and the hope He brings us - been
more needed in our world.
We continue to commemorate the Centenary of the First World War. The Bible Society,
in conjunction with the Royal British Legion, has produced a small collection of psalms,
poetry, prayers and hymns: Hear My Cry, subtitled words for when there are no words.
I quote from the books foreword, words written not by a priest but by a decorated soldier,
General the Lord Dannatt: God does not take sides between countries. However, he is
passionately concerned for the people who live in those countries and get caught up in
war. He made us. He loves us and wants us to love him in return. In peace or war, God
is interested in us as individuals. I echo these words.
This Remembrance-tide let us offer our prayers for our serving military personnel and
their families, for those challenged by life-changing injuries and for those who have lost
their lives in war (including civilians) during the past year: at the going down of the sun
and in the morning we will remember them. We also pray that peace and justice will
prevail in Syria, especially in the city of Aleppo - and all the countries of the Middle East.
Wishing you all a blessed and peaceful Advent, Reverend Judith

dynamic opportunities to exchange ideas, thoughts and opinions to encourage the newcomer to the art and to share triumphs of the practiced, commented Sue VaughanWilliams, a new local writer herself.
Norfolk Creative Arts and Sue are therefore pleased to present a platform to meet other
wordsmiths, and create the opportunity to hear thoughts on what shape future, regular or
occasional, structured or unstructured gatherings might be.
This informal FREE event takes place on Tuesday 8th November, 6.30pm till 8.30pm,
at Norfolk Creative Arts, Church Hill School, 71 Gayton Road, Grimston, PE32 1BG
