1. The document provides information on making circuit boards through the reaction of iron(III) chloride and copper. 2. Materials needed include a beaker, spatula, weighing balance, copper clads, iron(III) chloride, protective gloves, and acetone. 3. The theory explains that iron(III) chloride acts as a chlorinating agent, reacting with copper to form copper chlorides that are soluble in water, allowing copper traces to be embedded on copper clad circuit boards.

Aim:
In this project we will learn

How are the circuit boards which we use in our day to day life are
made, and the role of chemistry played in making these boards.
The reaction taking place between Iron(III) Chloride and Copper.

Theory:
FeCl3 is an unstable compound in because of +3 oxidation state. So it acts as a
good chlorinating agent. So it reacts with Copper to give CuCl and CuCl2. Both
the chlorides of copper are soluble in water. So we use this idea to embed copper
traces on the copper clad which has copper sedimented on it. In order to avoid
the FeCl3 coming in contact with all the copper on the board, we use permanent
markers/OHP markers to make the tracks for our circuit. This protects the layer
under the marker from reacting with the FeCl3 solution. To fasten the reaction,
we heat the reaction mixture. After the reaction has completed we can clean the
board with cold water and then with acetone to remove the marker 's traces. The
board will now have the circuit tracks for our circuit board. Then holes are drilled
with help of drilling machine in order to make holes for components.

Chemical Equations:
FeCl3 + Cu

FeCl3 + CuCl ----> FeCl2 + CuCl2
