721 Digital Speed Control

Chapter 1
General Information
Introduction
This manual describes the Woodward 721 Digital Speed Control, models 9905-834 (Low
Voltage type) and 9905-840 (High Voltage type). Refer to manual 02723 (721 Digital Control
Hardware Manual) for details on 721 Digital Control hardware.

Application
This 721DSC was designed for medium-high speed diesel engine control to drive a generator.
This control uses KW load input for exact droop control. This control has an auto unloading
function and generator circuit breaker control relay output.

Control Options
The 721 control requires the following power supply input voltages, with 18 watts as the
nominal power consumption at rated voltage:
18-40 Vdc (24 or 32 Vdc nominal)
Low Voltage type
90-150 Vdc (125 Vdc nominal)
High Voltage type
88-132 Vac 45-65 Hz (120 Vac nominal)
Discrete input voltages provide on/off command signals (for example Run/Stop or Idle/Rated )
to the electronic control. Each discrete input requires 10 mA at its 24 Vdc nominal voltage
rating (for 24 volt switching logic).

Control Accessories
Handheld Programmer is used for adjusting the 721 control. It plugs into the serial port of the
control.
SPM-A Synchronizer is used for synchronizing the generator phase to the phase of the power
bus. The synchronizer generates a close generator breaker signal to parallel the generator with
the power bus.

Chapter 2
Electrostatic Discharge Awareness
All electronic equipment is static-sensitive, some components more than others. To protect
these components from static damage, you must take special precautions to minimize or
eliminate electrostatic discharges.
Follow these precautions when working with or near the control.
1. Before doing maintenance on the electronic control, discharge the static electricity on
your body to ground by touching and holding a grounded metal object (pipes, cabinets,
equipment, etc.).
2. Avoid the build-up of static electricity on your body by not wearing clothing made of
synthetic materials. Wear cotton or cotton-blend materials as much as possible because
these do not store static electric charges as much as synthetics.
3. Keep plastic, vinyl, and styrofoam materials (such as plastic or styrofoam cups, cup
holders, cigarette packages, cellophane wrappers, vinyl books or folders, plastic bottles,
and plastic ash trays) away from the control, the modules, and the work area as much as
possible.
4. Do not remove the printed circuit board (PCB) from the control cabinet unless
absolutely necessary. If you must remove the PCB from the control cabinet, follow
these precautions:

Do not touch any part of the PCB except the edges.

Do not touch the electrical conductors, the connectors, or the components with
conductive devices or with your hands.

When replacing a PCB, keep the new PCB in the plastic antistatic protective bag it
comes in until you are ready to install it. Immediately after removing the old PCB
from the control cabinet, place it in the antistatic protective bag.

Chapter 3
Installation
Scope
This chapter contains general installation instructions for the 721 control. Power requirements,
environmental precautions, and location considerations are included to help you determine the
best location for the control. Additional information includes unpacking instructions and
electrical connections.

Unpacking
Before handling the control, read Chapter 2, Electrostatic Discharge Awareness. Be careful
when unpacking the electronic control. Check the control for signs of damage such as bent
panels, scratches, and loose or broken parts. If any damage is found, immediately notify the
shipper.

Location Considerations
Consider these requirements when selecting the mounting location:
adequate ventilation for cooling;
space for servicing and repair;
protection from direct exposure to water or to a condensation-prone environment;
protection from high-voltage or high-current devices, or devices which produce
electromagnetic interference;
avoidance of vibration;
selection of a location that will provide an operating temperature range of 40 to
+70 C (40 to +158 F).

CAUTION
The control must NOT be mounted on the engine.

Manual 02813

Electrical Connections
The plant wiring diagram is attached in the appendix of this manual.
Use shielded cable for the wiring of analog input/output signals, where shielded cable is
specified on the plant wiring drawing. All shielded cable must be twisted conductor pairs. Do
not attempt to tin the braided shield. Connect the shields to the ground as it is specified in the
plant wiring diagram. Wire exposed beyond the shield should be as short as possible, not
exceeding 50 mm (2 inches). The other end (which is not connected to the ground) of the
shields must be left open and insulated from any other conductor. If both ends are connected to
the ground, the result may be worse than using no shielded cable.
DO NOT run shielded signal wires along with other wires carrying large currents or high
voltages at any place on its path. See Woodward application note 50532, Interference Control
in Electronic Governing Systems, for more information.

Power Requirements
The high-voltage versions of the 721 Digital Speed Control require a voltage source of 88 to
132 Vac 50/60 Hz, or 90 to 150 Vdc. The low-voltage versions require a voltage source of 18 to
40 Vdc. Supply 24 Vdc for low voltage versions and 120 Vac/125 Vdc for high voltage
versions where possible.

CAUTION
To prevent damage to the control, do not exceed the input voltage range.
The 721DSC will be damaged if a voltage over 41 Vdc is supplied to a low
voltage version, or a voltage over 132 Vac/150 Vdc is supplied to a high
voltage version.

Run the power leads directly from the power source to the control. DO NOT POWER OTHER
DEVICES WITH LEADS COMMON TO THE CONTROL. Avoid long wire lengths.
If possible, do NOT turn off control power as part of a normal shutdown procedure. Use the
SHUTDOWN discrete input for normal shutdown. (See the Plant Wiring Diagram for the
SHUTDOWN discrete input. ) Leave the control powered except for service of the system and
extended periods of disuse.

Woodward

Manual 02813

721 Digital Speed Control

CAUTION
To prevent damage to the control, make sure that the alternator or other
battery-charging device is turned off or disconnected before disconnecting
the battery from the control.

CAUTION
To prevent damage to the engine, apply power to the 721 control at least
15 seconds prior to starting the engine. The control must have time to do
its power up diagnostics and become operational. Do not start the engine
unless the green POWER AND CPU OK indicator on the 721 control cover
comes on, because test failure turns off the output of the control.

Chapter 4
Description of Operation
General
This chapter provides an overview of the feature and operation of the 721 Digital Speed
Control. Refer to the function block diagram and the plant wiring diagram in the last part of this
manual to help you understand the following description.
The 721 Digital Speed Control uses a 16-bit microprocessor for all control functions, including
speed sensing, actuator control, executing algorithm, and speed setting. All control adjustment
are made with a hand-held terminal/display, called a Hand-Held programmer, that
communicates with the control via a serial port. The terminal/ display is disconnected from the
control when not in service, to provide security against tampering.
The speed sensors contain a special tracking filter designed for reciprocating engines, which
minimizes the effect of flexible coupling torsionals. This provides exceptionally smooth
steady-state control and allows the control dynamics to be matched to the engine rather than
detuned to compensate for coupling torsionals. The speed signal itself is usually provided by a
magnetic pickup or proximity switch supplying from 1 to 30 Vac.
The control provides 4-20 mA output terminals for tachometer output, KW load output, and
fuel-rack position output. In addition to these analog outputs, this control provides three relay
outputs for major alarm indication, minor alarm indication, and generator circuit breaker
de-energize command.

Control Dynamics
The control algorithms used in the 721 control are designed specifically for reciprocating
engine applications. To provide better transient performance, the control can be operated
automatically with two gain settings depending on engine speed error (speed error is the
difference between the speed setting and the actual engine speed). During steady-state
operation with a constant load, the control uses the base gain setting. (This gain is adjusted by
the user to a value to prevent the control from responding to minor fluctuations in engine speed,
a common problem with gas-fueled, spark-ignited engines. This feature eliminates potentially
damaging jiggle of the actuator and fuel system.) The control automatically increases gain by
an adjustable ratio when a speed error exceeding an adjustable window occurs. Operation with
base gain is restored once the control senses the return to steady-state speed.
The control can also compensate for nonlinear fuel systems and changes in engine dynamics
with load. The control dynamics are mapped as a function of actuator current (actuator current
is proportional to engine load). This provides optimal dynamics and smooth steady-state
operation for all conditions from no load to full engine load.

Woodward

Manual 02813

721 Digital Speed Control

The control also provides two complete sets of dynamic adjustments which are selected when a
discrete input is activated. The two sets of dynamics are provided for use where engine
operating conditions change, such as in systems with clutched-in loads, and electrical power
generation where the unit may be operated stand alone or paralleled with an infinite bus, or in
systems which demand idle operation to warm-up the engine and normal operation to drive a
load.

Speed Reference and Ramps

The 721 control provides local control of the speed reference by three discrete inputs: Raise
speed, Lower speed, and Idle/Rated. The speed reference ramps to another speed set point when
one of those discreet input is activated. When the Idle or Rated discrete input is activated,
Idle/Rated Rate is used to ramp, and when the Raise speed or Lower speed discrete input is
activated, Raise/Lower Rate is used to ramp.
The Idle speed set point is provided for engine start-up or cool down speed. Raise and Lower
speed discrete inputs are activated in order to raise or lower the load reference in droop
operation while Rated speed is selected.
The Lower speed command takes priority over the Raise speed command and Idle/Rated
command. If the Lower speed command is given, the speed reference ramps to the Lower Speed
Limit when the generator circuit breaker auxiliary contact is activated, and the speed reference
ramps to the Idle Speed when the generator circuit breaker auxiliary contact is not activated.
Closing either the Raise or Lower contacts while ramping from idle to rated or rated to idle
results in immediate cancellation of the idle to rated ramp or the rated to idle ramp. After the
ramp between the idle speed and the rated speed is canceled, the Raise and Lower contact can
be used to raise and lower the speed reference.
If the circuit breaker auxiliary contact is opened, the speed reference will return to Rated speed
automatically.

KW Load Reference and Ramps

This 721 control uses software designed for proprietary use for generator applications, and it
uses the KW droop function (which calculates the speed droop by the real KW load signal)
instead of the speed droop function (which calculates the speed droop by the actuator output
looking at the parameter corresponding to the engine load) usually used in electric/mechanical
governors. For the reason described above, the KW droop function works more accurately than
the speed droop function. In order to use the KW droop function, input the 4-20 mA KW Load
signal to the control, and enter set points for Rated KW and 20 mA KW Load Input in
Service mode. Rated KW set point is used to calculate the KW droop from no load to rated
load.
Due to sensing the real load, this control can unload the generator at the preset rate (Reset Rate)
and output the generator circuit breaker de-energize command when the generator load reaches
the minimum load (CB Open KW Load).

Woodward

721 Digital Speed Control

Manual 02813

Fuel Limiters
The 721 Digital Speed Control provides Idle Fuel Limit, Maximum Fuel Limit, and Turbo
Boost Pressure (Scavenging Pressure) Limit.
Idle Fuel Limit is provided to limit overfueling or flooding during start-up. This function
determines the maximum fuel in start-up.
Maximum Fuel Limit is provided to limit the maximum control output current to the actuator
during normal engine operating conditions.
Turbo Boost Pressure Limit is provided to limit the control output current by the fuel limit
value which corresponds to the current Turbo Boost Pressure input signal on the Boost Pressure
Limiter curve. The signal input for this function to limit the control output current can be not
only the turbo-boost pressure signal, but also any signal input available as a 4-20 mA signal
(like an exhaust temperature signal).

Monitoring the Control

The operator can monitor analog input values to the control, analog output values from the
control, and discrete input/output status using a Hand-Held programmer.
Engine rpm, actuator output, and KW load output are available for indication as a 4-20 mA
signal output from the control. In addition to these analog outputs, this control provides three
relay outputs for major alarm indication, minor alarm indication, and generator circuit breaker
de-energize command.

Chapter 5
Entering Control Set Points
Introduction
Even if 721 digital controls with same Woodward part number are controlling engines of the
same model, due to the variety of installations, plus system and component tolerance, all the
same set points will not be entered in each 721 control. In order to obtain the optimum control
performance at each engine control system, the 721 control must be tuned to each system.
This chapter contains information on how to enter control set points through the controls menu
system using a Hand Held Programmer.

WARNING
An improperly calibrated control can cause an engine overspeed or
other damage to the engine. To prevent possible serious injury from
an overspeeding engine, read this entire procedure before starting
the engine.

Hand Held Programmer and Menus

The Hand Held Programmer is a hand-held computer terminal that gets its power from the 721
control. The terminal connects to the RS-422 communication serial port on the control
(terminal J1). To connect the terminal, slightly loosen the right-hand screw in the cover over J1
and rotate the cover clock wise to expose the 9-pin connector. Then firmly seat the connector
on the terminal into J1.
The programmer does a power-up self-test whenever it is plugged into the control. When the
self-test is complete, the screen will display two lines of information. This is information
relating to the application. Press the ESC key if it does not appear. Pressing the ID key will
change the display to show the part number of the software and version letter. The part number
and version letter are necessary if it becomes necessary to contact Woodward service. Record
them for future reference.

Woodward

721 Digital Speed Control

Manual 02813

The programmer screen is a four-line, backlighted LCD display. The display permits you to
look at two separate functions or menu items at the same time. Use the
Up/ Down Arrow
key to toggle between the two display items. An @ mark is displayed at the leftmost column of
the active line. The operator can tune or adjust the set point on the active line. The BKSP and
SPACE keys will scroll through the display to show the remainder of a prompt if it is longer
than the display screens 18 characters.
The 721 has two sets of menus; the Service menus and the Configure menus. The Service
menus allow easy access and tuning while the engine is running. The Configure menus may
only be entered if the I/O is shut down, and hence the engine stopped.

Configure Menus
To access the Configure menus, the engine must be shut down. Press the . key at the master
screen (WOODWARD GOVERNOR / 721 DIGITAL CONTROL). The display will show,
To Enable CONFIGURE, Press ENTER. Press the ENTER key and the display will show,
To Shutdown I/O, Press ENTER. Press the ENTER key and this will allow you into the
Configure menus.
Note: If the engine is running during this process, it will be shut down due to shutting
down of the I/O of the control.
To move between the menus use the 3 and 4 keys. To move through the set points within a
menus, use the 5 and 6 keys. Once within a menu, to return to the menu header, press the
ESC key. To leave the Configure menus, press the ESC key. The set points will be
automatically saved when leaving Configure, then the control will restart the software. If power
to the control is removed before the control restarts after pressing the ESC key, the set points
will revert to the previously saved settings. Operators should save the set points occasionally by
pressing the SAVE key as they change important set points in the Configure menu.

10

Woodward

Manual 02813

721 Digital Speed Control

Service Menus
To access the Service menus press the 6 key at the master screen. To move between menus,
and to move through set points within menus, follow the instruction as for the Configure menus.
Also to return to the menu header, or to leave Service, follow the Configure instructions.

Adjusting Set Points

To adjust a set point, use the Turtle up or the Rabbit up keys to increase the value, and the
Turtle Down or the Rabbit Down keys to decrease the value. The Rabbit Up and Rabbit
Down keys will make the rate of change faster than the Turtle Up and Turtle Down keys.
This is useful during initial setup where a value may need to be changed significantly. Where
necessary, to select TRUE, use either the Turtle Up or the Rabbit Up keys, and to select
FALSE, use the Turtle Down key and the Rabbit Down key.
To obtain an exact value, press the = key. Key in the required figure and press ENTER.
Note: This may be done only if the figure is within 10% of the existing value.
To save set points at any time, use the SAVE key. This will transfer all new set point values
into the EEPROM memory. The EEPROM retains all set points when power is removed from
the control.

CAUTION
To prevent possible damage to the engine resulting from improper control
setting, make sure you save the set points before removing power from the
control. Failure to save the set points before removing power from the
control causes them to revert to the previously saved settings.

you into the Configure menus.
The Configure Menus must be adjusted before the engine is first started .
1. Reverse Acting Act
Set the direction of the control actuator output to increase fuel. Forward-acting actuators
require increased current to increase fuel. Reverse-acting actuators require decreased current to
increase fuel. Set TRUE for a reverse-acting actuators, and set FALSE for forward-acting
actuators. Reverse acting actuators should always incorporate a mechanical ballhead backup
governor, such as a Woodward EGB or PG-EG.
2. Rated Speed
Set the speed reference (in rpm) for the normal generator operating speed.
3. No.1 Gear Teeth
Set the number of teeth or holes in the gear or flywheel that speed sensor 1 is on. If the gear is
running at camshaft speed (one-half engine speed) then you must enter one-half the number of
teeth on the gear (the control requires the number of teeth per engine revolution).
4. No.2 Gear Teeth
Set the number of teeth or holes in the gear or flywheel that speed sensor 2 is on. If the gear is
running at camshaft speed (one-half engine speed) then you must enter one-half the number of
teeth on the gear (the control requires the number of teeth per engine revolution).

18

Woodward

Manual 02813

721 Digital Speed Control

WARNING
The number of gear teeth is used by the control to convert
pulses from the speed sensing device to engine rpm. To
prevent possible serious injury from an overspeeding engine,
make sure the control is properly programmed to convert the
gear tooth count into engine rpm. Improper conversion could
cause engine overspeed.

5. No.1 Max Hz
Set the maximum frequency that the 721 control will sense at speed sensor #1. Set 125 %
frequency or more which will be sensed when the engine is operated at the Raise Speed Limit
speed.
6. No.2 Max Hz
Set the maximum frequency that the 721 control will sense at speed sensor #2. Set 125 %
frequency or more which will be sensed when the engine is operated at the Raise Speed Limit
speed.

CAUTION
Never set the value less than 125 % of the frequency which will be
sensed when the engine is operated at the Raise Speed Limit speed.

7. Use No.2 MPU

Enter True when two MPUs are used. Enter False when only one MPU is used. Use No.1
MPU input for a single MPU application.
8. Use Start Pos.
Enter True to operate the engine at a speed lower than Idle speed just after the engine is
started, and raise the speed reference to Idle speed automatically later. Enter False to start the
engine at Idle speed. (This is a common engine start method.) The operator can enter in the
*Start Pos. Set* menu in Service only when this set point is set to True.
9. Use Boost F/Lmt
Enter True when Turbo Boost Pressure Limit is used. Enter False when not used. Minor
alarm will be activated on loss of pressure signal (terminal 42 and 43) when Use Boost F/Lmt is

Dynamics 1
Dynamic adjustment are settings that affect the stability and transient performance of the
engine. There are two sets of dynamics provided. The set being used is selected by an external
contact input, like the Circuit Breaker Aux contact input. See Fig 2 for the relationship between
dynamics set points (i.e. Gain and Stability) and the engine speed. Refer Woodward manual
01304 for the detail of how to tune engine dynamics.

Woodward

21

721 Digital Speed Control

Manual 02813

1.Idle Gain
Idle Gain is set to provide stable control of the engine at Idle speed. The Gain determines how
much the control responds to an error in engine speed from the speed reference setting.
2.Gain 1
Gain determines how fast the control responds to an error in engine speed from the
speed-reference setting. The Gain is set to provide stable control of the engine at light or
unloaded conditions.
3.Reset 1
Reset compensates for the lag time of the engine. It adjusts the time required for the control to
return the speed to zero error after a disturbance. Reset is adjusted to prevent slow hunting and
to minimize speed overshoot after a load disturbance.
4.Compensation 1
Compensation compensates for the actuator and fuel system time constant.
5.Gain Ratio 1
Gain Ratio is the ratio of the Gain setting at steady state to the Gain setting during transient
conditions. The Gain Ratio operates in conjunction with the Window Width and Gain
adjustments by multiplying the Gain set point by the Gain Ratio when the speed error is greater
than the Window Width. This makes the control dynamics fast enough to minimize
engine-speed overshoot on start-up and to reduce the magnitude of speed error when loads are
changing. This allows a lower gain at steady state for better stability and reduced steady-state
actuator linkage movement. See Figure 2.
6.Window Width 1
Window Width is the magnitude (in rpm) of a speed error at which the control automatically
switches to fast response. The control does not use the absolute value of speed error, but
anticipated speed error to make this switch. This method provides for quick switching to the
high Gain value when an offspeed occurs and early switching to the low Gain value when
recovering from the speed transient. This provides smoother switching than if the absolute
speed error was used for the window. See Figure 3.

22

Woodward

Manual 02813

721 Digital Speed Control

7.Gain Slope 1
Gain Slope changes Gain as a function of actuator output. Since actuator output is proportional
to engine load, this makes Gain a function of engine load. Gain Slope operates in conjunction
with the Gain Breakpoint adjustment to increase (or decrease) Gain when percent Actuator
Output is greater than the breakpoint. This compensates for systems having high (or low) gain
at low load levels. This allows the Gain setting to be lower at light or no load for engine
stability, yet provide good control performance under loaded conditions. See Figure 4.
8.Gain Breakpoint
Gain Breakpoint sets the percent output above which the Gain Slope becomes effective. It
should usually be set just above the minimum load output. See Figure 3.
This set point is applied to Dynamics 2 as well.
9.Speed Filter
Speed Filter adjust the cutoff frequency of a low pass filter used on the speed sensing input for
speed sensor. The filter is used to attenuate engine firing frequencies. See Fig.5. To calculate
the desired filter cutoff point, use the following formula:
camshaft frequency = (engine rpm) / 60
[for 2-cycle engine]
camshaft frequency = (engine rpm) / 120
[for 4-cycle engine]
firing (cutoff) frequency = (camshaft frequency)(number of engine cylinders)
Enter the value of 1/firing (cutoff) frequency.

Dynamics 2
Dynamics 2 is selected when the contact G is closed.
1.Gain 2
Gain determines how fast the control responds to an error in engine speed from the
speed-reference setting. The Gain is set to provide stable control of the engine at light or
unloaded conditions.
2.Reset 2
Reset compensates for the lag time of the engine. It adjusts the time required for the control to
return the speed to zero error after a disturbance. Reset is adjusted to prevent slow hunting and
to minimize speed overshoot after a load disturbance.

3.Compensation 2
Compensation compensates for the actuator and fuel system time constant.
4.Gain Ratio 2
Gain Ratio is the ratio of the Gain setting at steady state to the Gain setting during transient
conditions. The Gain Ratio operates in conjunction with the Window Width and Gain
adjustments by multiplying the Gain set point by the Gain Ratio when the speed error is greater
than the Window Width. This makes the control dynamics fast enough to minimize
engine-speed overshoot on start-up and to reduce the magnitude of speed error when loads are
changing. This allows a lower gain at steady state for better stability and reduced steady-state
actuator linkage movement. See Figure 2.
5.Window Width 2
Window Width is the magnitude (in rpm) of a speed error at which the control automatically
switches to fast response. The control does not use the absolute value of speed error, but
anticipated speed error to make this switch. This method provides for quick switching to the
high Gain value when an offspeed occurs and early switching to the low Gain value when
recovering from the speed transient. This provides smoother switching than if the absolute
speed error was used for the window. See Figure 3.
6.Gain Slope 2
Gain Slope changes Gain as a function of actuator output. Since actuator output is proportional
to engine load, this makes Gain a function of engine load. Gain Slope operates in conjunction
with the Gain Breakpoint adjustment to increase (or decrease) Gain when percent Actuator
Output is greater than the breakpoint. This compensates for systems having high (or low) gain
at low load levels. This allows the Gain setting to be lower at light or no load for engine
stability, yet provide good control performance under loaded conditions. See Figure 4.

Speed Setting
Speed adjustments are the settings that affect the speed reference.
1.Idle/Rated Rate
Idle/Rated Rate is the speed reference ramp rate when the Idle/Rated switch contact is operated.
The speed reference will ramp at this rate from Idle speed to Rated speed or from Rated speed
to Idle speed when the status of Idle/Rated switch contact changed.

24

Woodward

Manual 02813

721 Digital Speed Control

2.Raise/Lower Rate
Raise/Lower Rate is the speed reference ramp rate when the Raise or Lower contact switch is
closed. The speed reference will ramp at this rate to Raise Speed Limit or Lower Speed Limit
as it was specified with Raise or Lower contact.
3.Reset Rate
Reset Rate is the speed reference ramp rate when the external Open To Reset Speed Set contact
was opened. This ramp rate is used when the control is unloading automatically.
4.Raise Speed Limit
Raise Speed Limit is the maximum speed reference setting. It is used to limit the speed setting
raise by Raise command to a maximum. It normally is set at the maximum engine operating
speed.
5.Lower Speed Limit
Lower Speed Limit is the minimum speed reference setting while the Circuit Breaker Auxiliary
contact (contact H) is closed. It is used to limit the Lower Speed Setting inputs to a minimum.
The speed reference ramps to Idle speed if Lower Speed contact is closed while the Circuit
Breaker Auxiliary contact (contact H) is open.
6.Idle Speed
Idle Speed sets the speed selected while Idle/Rated contact switch is open. It is the speed set
point to which the speed reference ramps if the Lower Speed contact is closed while the Circuit
Breaker Auxiliary contact (contact H) is open. In order to set this set point to a value less than
200 rpm, MPU signal failure level in the software must be reduced, too. If the Idle Speed set
point level is reduced without reducing MPU signal failure level, the engine may stall
unexpectedly although it appears to be running normally.
Contact Woodward Japan to reduce MPU signal failure level.
7.Tach at 4mA Output
Tach at 4mA Output is the engine speed when the Tachometer output is 4mA.
8.Tach at 20mA Output
Tach at 20mA Output is the engine speed when the Tachometer output is 20mA.

9.Dither Rate (ms)

Dither is a small AC signal to the actuator to overcome friction in the actuator, especially using
a UG type or UA type actuator. Dither Rate sets the dither frequency.
10.Dither In (%)
Dither In sets the amplitude of the dither signal. Enter zero when dither is not used.

Start Pos. Set

These set point menus are displayed only when Use Start Pos. in Configure is set to True.
1. Start Pos. Speed
If Use Start Pos. set point in Configure was set to True, the control will start up the engine
at this speed. In order to set this set point to a value less than 200 rpm, MPU signal failure
level in the software must be reduced, too. If the Start Pos. Speed set point level is reduced
without reducing MPU signal failure level, the engine may stall unexpectedly although it
appears to be running normally.
Contact Woodward Japan to reduce MPU signal failure level.
2. Start/Idle Rate
If the Use Start Pos. set point in Configure was set to True, the speed reference will ramp
from Start Pos. Speed to Idle Speed at this ramp rate after start-up.
3. Start Pos. Cncl Dly
If the Use Start Pos. set point in Configure was set to True, the control will operate the
engine at Start Pos. Speed for the time set here, then raise the engine speed to Idle Speed

KW Setting
KW load adjustments are set points that affect the KW load reference.
1.Rated KW
Rated KW is normally set at the maximum rated engine KW load.

Major and Minor Alarm
Major Alarms
The major alarm output relay is normally energized. Upon event(s) of:
-governor (CPU) failure and/or
-both speed signal failure and/or
-KW signal failure (only when it is so programmed)
the major alarm relay will be de-energized and latched, and the actuator signal will go to
minimum fuel (when reverse acting type actuator with mechanical backup governor is selected,
the control is switched to the mechanical governor).
NOTE: Engine shutdown caused by actuator signal failure will not cause major alarm
immediately, however, the major alarm will be initiated when the engine stops.

Minor Alarms
The minor alarm output relay is normally de-energized. Upon event(s) of:
-speed signal failure of any one of the two MPUs and/or
-KW signal failure (only when it is enabled in configuration) and/or
-Turbo Boost Pressure signal failure (when it is enabled in configuration)
the minor alarm relay will be energized. A minor alarm will not directly cause an engine
shutdown.
