Hawaiian Unicode Style Document
Hawaiian Unicode Style Document
If you frequently need to type in the Hawaiian language using the ³Hawaiian´ keyboard that ships with
OS X or the customized Hawaiian Unicode keyboard provided by the Hale Kuamoµo, one of the
customizations you can do to Microsoft Word to make your life a whole lot easier is to set the global
Styles to use fonts that have all of the macron/vowel combinations and the µokina included. This
document itself contains modified versions of some of the common default Styles, and the instructions
below tell you how to make them the defaults when you create a new document in Microsoft Word.
This document includes several common styles that are found in Word by default. This includes
³Normal´ and several ³Heading´ styles. In this document, I have made Times New Roman the font
specified in the ³Normal´ style and Helvetica the font used in all of the ³Heading´ styles, though the
size and other characteristics will vary. Both of these fonts include the µokina and kahakō needed to type
in Hawaiian. Here is now to install them:
5) When you are done, click on the ³Close´ button and you will be returned to Word. The styles
that were embedded in this document are now your global defaults.

You can easily change any of the styles in this document or any other. o to
the Formatting Palatte in Word. If it is not displayed, go to the ³View´ menu
and select ³Formatting Palatte´ and it should display to the right of your
current document.
Note the ¶ symbol to the right of the ³Heading´ styles in the palatte that
appears in the graphic to the right. This indicates that you may edit the style.
1) Click on the ¶ symbol that appears to the right of ³Heading 1´ and a
small contextual menu will appear. From this menu, select ³Modify
Style¶.
