A Message from the Vice-Chancellor

This, the first graduation ceremony of our University and the
installation of our Chancellor, is a momentous occasion for
The University of Fiji. We are all filled with pride that our first
Chancellor is His Excellency the President of the Republic of
the Fiji Islands and Turaga Na Tui Vuda, Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu
Uluivuda.

I wish to congratulate the first graduands of The University of Fiji. We salute you
today on your achievement. We have done our best to prepare you for your lifes
journey. We hope that our principles of lifelong learning, of integrity and good
governance, of compassion and humanity, and of excellence will make you
different and better professionals.

I am also delighted that many of the graduands have already secured good jobs.
Our top Accounting student is now tutoring at USP, an indication of the acceptance
of our high standards. Others have found jobs with the Government, academic
institutions and the private sector.

In the short space of three years, The University of Fiji has created a high and
favourable profile in Fiji, regionally and internationally. It is seen as an innovative,
responsive, relevant and affordable University.

The University of Fiji is also contributing to the development of a more cohesive,

united Fiji society. All our students are required to take courses on Fiji, ethics and
governance, and in Fijian Language and Culture and Hindi and Indian Culture.

The Fiji Government has recognized the University and provided an operational
grant this year. We are grateful for this support.
The Universitys development reflects the vision and determination of the Arya
Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, the planning skills and resourcefulness of Dr. Ganesh
Chand as the Interim CEO of the University prior to my arrival as the Foundation
Vice-Chancellor, the goodwill of the public of Fiji, the generosity of our donors and
the landowners, the pioneering contributions of our staff, and the support of the
Government of Fiji. We owe much gratitude to them.
May God bless our Chancellor and our first graduates.
God Bless Fiji.

Professor Rajesh Chandra, BA, GCED, MA S.Pac, PhD UBC

Foundation Vice-Chancellor

About the University of Fiji

The University of Fiji was established in December 2004 by Arya Pratinidhi
Sabha of Fiji to provide high quality, affordable higher education to many
students who had no access to other tertiary institutions.
Among the Universitys objectives are to provide higher education relevant to
Fijis needs, but within a global framework and to support Fijis development
as a sustainable, peaceful, inclusive and progressive society committed to
good governance.

The Ministry of Education and the University have signed an MOU to provide a
framework for the relationship between the Government and The University
of Fiji until an Act is passed to provide a more complete legislative framework
for the University. The University is now a registered and recognized
provider of higher education in Fiji (Recognition No. 8190).

The University of Fiji is governed by a Council, which consists of the main

education stakeholders in Fiji, as well as prominent community and business
leaders.
The Universitys initial development is funded by the sponsor, the Arya
Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, a body which has operated in the country for a
century and has been prominent in providing quality primary and secondary
education.

The University of Fiji has entered into arrangements with a number of

universities to ensure international recognition of its qualifications and to
encourage joint research and publications, including the University of
Canberra and the Indira Gandhi National Open University, one of the worlds
largest universities.

The University offers programmes through its Schools at the Certificate,

Diploma, Undergraduate Degree and Postgraduate levels in disciplines such as
Accounting, Economics, Management, Computing Science, Information
Technology, Mathematics, Language and Literature. In 2007 a Masters in
Educational Leadership programme, and studies in Fijian Language and
Culture were introduced. From 2008, the University is offering MBBS and LLB
degrees and Hindi Language and Culture.
The University is also supported by five Centres of Excellence.
