Android devices run the open source Android operating system developed by Google. While Android itself is open source, Google also provides proprietary Google applications like Gmail, Maps, and the Play Store. These Google apps, also called Gapps, are not included by default on all Android devices. To install Gapps, users must download the correct version based on their device's Android version and CPU architecture from websites like opengapps.org. They then flash the Gapps zip file in their device's recovery mode to complete the installation process and gain access to core Google functionality and services.
