In this Achievement Standard you will study two music works of differing genres,
styles or eras. Both works include score analysis.
You will compare music works in order to demonstrate your knowledge and
understanding of:
These particular assessments involve the study of two music works. One is Phlex
by Blindspott and the other is Concierto de Aranjuez ‘Adagio’ by Rodrigo.
The comparison component of this Achievement standard will be compared within
the topic- Not between works (Concierto De Aranjuez- Adagio separate ‘work’)

Context/setting:
Work for the standard will be occurring over Terms 2 and 3.
Students will study at least two music topics or larger works of differing genres, styles or eras in
order to meet requirements for 90270 v2.
At least one work for this standard will be from a New Zealand context.
(Note: This topic DOES include a NZ work.)
Focussed listening will be an integral part of acquiring background knowledge, and analysis.
The whole of the work Phlex by Blindspott will be studied with comparison to Drown by Blindspott.
The music chosen for study will allow students to compare the musical output in order to
demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of:
o social/ historical/cultural contexts of both works;
o the features (including characteristic song features, relationship between mood, characterisation
and musical material, and performance features) of the works.
This particular assessment involves the study of selected music for differing periods of Blindspott’s
career. One is Blindspott’s ‘Phlex’ and the other is Blindspott’s ‘Drown’. The comparison concerns
the similarities and differences of the composers/band members in portraying emotion through
musical output, the comparison in the qualities of the varying genres, the comparison of the
popularity of each piece and the comparison of the specifications ‘specs’ of both works.
Conditions:
• Both class time and homework time will be used to prepare for the assessment.
• Requiring students to complete work in class time will assist in ensuring authenticity of their
work.
• Students may bring any notes or extra materials they have researched to class for ongoing
work.

• Texts from the internet about the band.
