December 2004
This document contains all the information that an ANSA user should know about features improvement, new
features that have been added and problems that have been fixed during the development from version 11.3.5 to
version 11.3.6
The ANSA v11.3.x Release Notes are included at the end of the current document (PDF).
All previous ANSA v11.1.x & v11.2.x Release Notes are included in the
ANSA v11.2.4 Release Notes document (PDF).
IMPORTANT:
UNIGRAPHICS to ANSA Translation can be achieved by a separate executable for Windows platforms
with all necessary third-party libraries and tools for a complete Unigraphics *prt and I-DEAS *.xpk
conversion. It requires a Unigraphics [ NX2] installation on the same machine that the conversion will
take place.
Use the ansa_ug.bat for this translation.
More details can be found in the ansa_ug.pdf document.
Substitute all documentation and On-Line HELP with those escorting each new version.

GENERAL
CATIA v4 to ANSA
Translation
[ ansa
-catia ]
New flags:
- layer_vis
added as an option for the CATIA v4 to ANSA translation.
This option allows the translation of the entities which are visible without the need to
use the NOSHOW space.
! This new option cannot be used simultaneously with the flags:
- layer , and
- xlayer
A message informs the user about this conflict:
WARNING : Cannot use -layer_vis and -layer or -xlayer. Second flag ignored !
- notjoin
the Faces of the SKIN are not joined to create a single Macro Area in the ANSA file.
The name of the ANSA database which has been used for the actual output-file is
written as a comment in the output FE-model file:

ALIGN (DECKs>NODEs) function is added also in the GRIDs Group of the MESH
menu.
DECKs
-- PAM-CRASH 2G PLINK : The PLINK node [N1] is connected to the shell mesh
with BAR_/ elements with PART,BAR assigned a null material
[BAR/BEAM MATERIAL type 200].
-- RADIOSS WELD SPRING [SPR_BEAM_13] : The nodes of the SPRING element
are connected to the underlying surface mesh with /TRUSS elements [Type 2, Truss
Property] with zero (0) Cross Section Area [A]. The LAW01 material type is assigned,
by default, to the Truss Property.
BOLT
The Inner hole diameter (free bound) is set as the Body Diameter value when the
"Zone : In/Out" , option is used and not the average of the In hole diameter and Out
hole diameter.

GENERAL
CONNECTIONs
Manager
RADIOSS WELD : It was not allowed to use an already defined SPRING Property (13)
while applying RADIOSS SPOT WELDs. Moreover new Spring Property was created in
any case a RADIOSS WELD was defined.
PAM PLINK : Create Rupture model flag option was not available for SGI platforms.
ABAQUS FASTENER : When FASTENERs are generated through the Connections
Manager using a blank "Search Radius" value, this value appeared as "zero" in the
FASTENER card, instead of blank.
ANSA.defaults
On SUN platforms ANSA could not started if the PAM_MAT_DB variable in the
ANSA.defaults pointed to a material database.
ANSA_TRANSL
*.attr files
Hierarchy of Parts was not properly input through the use of SUBSTRUCT keyword of
.attr files in Unix/Linux platforms.
TOPO
FACEs
DELETE : When Faces remained highlighted (e.g. by the UCHECK function) selected to
be deleted ANSA illegally terminated.
EXTEND : major error which corrupted ANSA files has been fixed.
MESH

ORIENT : Fixed problem in Macro Areas orientation after meshing, which appeared in files
produced by the Catia v4 to ANSA translation.

FILE>INPUT>
Include files
[ NASTRAN ] [ LS-DYNA ] :
Nested Include files were ignored during the Input process.
BOLT
In the Bolt Properties card of the BOLT function, the value of the field "length factor" was
not taken into account.
SET
SETs of CONS (e.g. created by the BOLT function) are now converted to SET of Nodes if
the Macro Area bounded by these CONS is selected to be RELEASE by the
MESH>ELEMENTs>RELEASE function. This error leaded to empty SETs.
MASS on SET
By picking a node of the set (e.g. to move it with MV.FREE) highlighted all the mass
elements of the SET and the movement was becoming too slow. This occurred even if the
F12>MASS is OFF.
ALIGN
If a node was selected to be aligned with a line defined by two Perimeter Nodes that had
been moved away from their original position, the node was aligned to the line defined by
the original position of the guide nodes instead of their current location.
MAT.DB
The COPY2LIST >Update by IDs function was not able to change the type of materials so
as to assign the materials from the Material Database to the Properties of the model.

CONTACT
Support all possible combinations of options inside the *CONTACT keyword (except
{OPTION 1} which is expected after prefix *CONTACT_).
So as to allow reading of the contact types such as:
*TIED_CONTACT_NODES_TO_SURFACE_OFFSET without the option ID.
*CONTACT_AUTOMATIC_SINGLE_SURFACE_MPP_TITLE
BOLT
PAM-CRASH
PART
PART_/ type (e.g. SHELL, SOLID, etc) incorrectly do not read in if the type characters
(inside "17 to 24") are not left oriented, starting from the 17th position.
IORT = blank, 0, 1 & Orthotropic materials
PART with IORT = 0 (zero) or 1 (one) could be accepted only if there was a reference of a
material type of 107/108/109/117/118/130/131/132/140.
Thus, in case of Material types e.g. MAT103, MAT 100, etc. only IORT=blank was
accepted.
Now even if IORT has a value of 0 or 1,a typical shell material is acceptable.
When importing a pc file with PART,BEAM having a valid (not blank) IDSEC (=0,1,2,3,4)
ANSA shouldn't reject the reference material if it is not a MAT 213. (and create a default
mat213 whose id updates the PART card).
Material filtering fixed. A Pam-Crash PART type BEAM with valid IDSEC field
(=0,1,2,3,4), accepts now also material with type 200 and 201
RADIOSS
Importing RADIOSS file having material with blank (empty) name caused illegal
termination of the program.. (not happened on SGI).
ABAQUS
CONTACT PAIR
CONSTRAINT
EQUATION and MPC Constraints in EFM Tool : the G2, C2, A2 fields added in the
Modification card of the EQUATION Constraint and the MPC Constraint.
*AMPLITUDE and
*PLASTIC
Blank fields and lines for *AMPLITUDE and *PLASTIC read as zero. When reading an
include file such as that used in *PLASTIC or *AMPLITUDE, if there is a comma left at the
end of the last number, then ANSA added an arbitrary number which didnt exist in the file.
-- When reading *AMPLIDUTE, avoid handling of continuation line comma as an extra
blank field. Issue a WARNING message in the ANSA_Input log.
-- Blank lines are ignored when reading `INDEPENDENT VARIABLES'.
(e.g.: *PLASTIC data lines)

New Labeled Syntax for the session file commands (available for limited supported commands)
Labeled Syntax is as follows:
ANSA_FUNCTION : LABEL = ARGUMENT(s) if any
An example is:
OUTPUT>ST-LITHGRP : filename=/home/test.stl mode=all format=binary
This line instructs ANSA to output in STL format in the file /home/test.stl all the elements in binary format. Note
that for the Labeled Syntax, the labeled arguments (3 in the above example) do not require a specific order. In this
sense this format is more flexible.
For more details refer to ANSA v11.3.5 Users Guide pdf document, Chapter 23

the Abaqus inp file) and not to have multiple SETs if you activate the writing of the
ANSA Comments during Output and the Merge SETs with same name during
Input.

UTIL
Rigid on nodes: changes the definition of rigid bodies which are defined on sets to

Rigid on set: change the definition of the rigid bodies defined on nodes to rigid bodies
defined on sets. A new Set is created consisting of the rigid bodys nodes.
AUXILIARIES
BOLT
Inner : defines the Bolts Head with the nodes of the selected feature
line (inner).
In/Out : defines the Bolts Head with the nodes of the selected feature
line and the nodes of the next outer ring.
In/Out X : defines the Bolts Head with one node of the selected feature
line by turns with one node of the next outer ring.
length factor : specify the body elements length value using the ~ prefix,
or the absolute length using the ! prefix, or define the length factor as a
parameter of the distance between the holes centers.
Split in : specify the number of the generated body elements.
NOTES:
- if you define a value with the ~ prefix (e.g. ~5) in the length factor the function
ignores the value of the split in field. For example: Distance=22, length factor: ~5
gives 5 line elements with length of 4.4. The total Body length equals the distance (like
having length factor=1).
- if you define : length factor= !20 and split in: 5, the total length of the Body is 20 and
each of the 5 line elements has length 4.
- the SET for the Head of the Bolt (e.g. RBE2, RBODY, etc.) is defined as a SET of
CONS when possible.

TRSFM
This function can be used either to manage existing (through a list window) or to create
new TRSFM keywords.
You can apply translations (MOVE), rotations (ROTA) and scaling (SCAL) on the
entities of the specified SET (GROUP).
The enhanced and user friendly interface allows the user to specify the base point, the
movement distance, the movement vector, the rotation axis, the rotation angle, etc.
The user can also specify an origin and a target coordinate system (each one
defined by 3 points) to apply the transformation entries.
If the respective flag (TRSFM) in the F12 window is activated the GROUP, which is
defined in the TRSFM card is displayed in the transformed position, while if the flag
is not activated the entities of the given GROUP remain in the original position.
The TRSFM_/ card is reported in the Text window (via the EDIT button) so as to allow
Copy-Paste operation.
The 0.9 is used as the default value for the time step scale factor if the SCALE

ANSA.defaults
As soon as ANSA starts a message is reported in the Text window about the
ANSA.defaults files that have been read (full pathname). The order that these
pathnames appear in the Text window is the order that ANSA reads the existing
ANSA.defaults files.
!
Firstly the program reads in the ANSA.defaults file located in the ANSA_HOME
directory.
!
Secondly the ANSA.defaults file located in the users home directory
!
Finally ANSA reads in the ANSA.defaults file located in the current working
directory, which is the directory you call ANSA to run. If you use a Shortcut Icon
for ANSA on Windows platforms, this points to the Start In directory.
Note that last read ANSA.defaults file overrides any common settings of the previously
read files.
Mind that, if you want to keep your own settings without harming the common
configuration (e.g. quality criteria and meshing parameters of a Project) you may divide
the settings of the ANSA.defaults file, according to your needs, in up to three
ANSA.defaults files. When ANSA starts, it looks for the ANSA.defaults files in three
locations, as described above. In this way you could combine the settings from three
different files.

UTIL.
Mat. Orient
Tool for the definition or modification of the material orientation vector for modeling
composite and other non-orthotropic materials (this vector can be visualized by
activating the respective flag in the F11 window). The vector is defined as an angle in the
element entry card. For the angle definition the user specifies a direction vector or selects
any valid coordinate system and this is projected on visible elements. Elements with a
normal vector nearly aligned (angle less than a given limit) to this user specified
direction can optionally be identified and put in a set so that the user can always check
the quality of the projection.
Changed Draw of Mat. Orient in F11. The vector is drawn in the psi direction. (First Ply
angle is not added)

If the [MOVE] option of the Geometry Group functions (e.g.: TRANSL,
SYMMETRY, etc.) is applied to entities and CORDs (which are referenced only by
the selected entities) no copy of COORDs takes place.
Fixed error in reading [ FILE>INPUT ] IDs> 2^24 (about 16700000) of Coordinate
Systems, Load_Curves, Tables, etc. that referred in Materials.
Drawing problems regarding the Magnitude of Loads are fixed.
