1.laser Wavelength

This document describes an experiment to determine the wavelength of a laser and the particle size of a fine powder. To measure the laser wavelength, the laser beam is diffracted by a grating and the angles of diffraction are used in the grating equation. To measure particle size, laser light is diffracted by dusted powder, creating concentric rings on a screen. The radii of the rings and laser wavelength are used to calculate particle size via a diffraction equation. Measurements of diffraction spot positions, ring radii, and distances are recorded to calculate the laser wavelength and powder particle size, which are reported in the results section.

DETERMINATION OF WAVELENGTH OF LASER AND PARTICLE SIZE

OF FINE POWDER
Aim: To determine the wavelength of semiconductor Laser using grating and to determine the
particle size of powder
Apparatus: Laser source, grating plate, screen, fine powder etc
Diagram:

Procedure :( 1) To determine the wavelength of semiconductor LASER light

Laser light is placed on the table and is switched on. A screen is placed 1 to 1.5 m away
from the source, the position of the laser is adjusted such that the laser beam falls on the centre of
the screen.
The grating is placed between laser and screen and adjusted to get clear diffraction. D
the distance between grating and screen is measured. The distance of spot marked on screen.
Screen is removed and distance of various spot Xmis measured. Angle of diffraction for mth spot
is calculated using formula.

Wavelength of laser light can be calculated using formula

( sinm )
m

Where c= 5.08 10-5m.

(2) To determine the size of the particle of a fine powder:
The monochromatic radiation from the laser source is made to fall on glass slide placed
between source and screen on which fine powder is dusted. If the particle size is comparable
with that of wavelength of laser light used then diffracted light by the particle is produced
(concentric rings) on the screen.
If a is the size of the particle, dn is the radius of nth dark ring, D is the distance between slit
A sin n
and screen and is the wavelength of laser light then

To measure dn is the position of slit is adjusted so that a clear circular ring pattern is obtained on
screen. The centre of ring pattern is marked on screen. Inner and outer radius d n is calculated
experimentally. The same process is repeated for different values of D
Observations and Tabular column:
