7Levels of Classification

Kingdom- 5 Groups within Kingdom
(Which group does it belong to? Is it
an. Animalia, Plant, Fungi, Protista,
Monera)
2.
Phylum- The structure of the animal
(Does it have a backbone?)

-Chordate Phylum: Animals which have a


backbone.
E.g.
Fish,
Reptiles,
Birds,
Amphibians, and Mammals.
-Arthropod Phylum: Animals that have an
exoskeleton, (meaning the skeleton is on the
outside of the body).
E.g.
Insects,
Arachnids=
(Spiders
or
scorpions), and Crustaceans= (Prawns,
Lobster, Crayfish).
-Mollusc Phylum: Soft-bodied animals that
sometimes have a hard shell. E.g. Snails,
Slugs, Octopus, Squid, Clams, Oysters, and
Mussels

3.Class- Are they a mammal or a reptile? This


allows us to tell mammals from birds, fish
and reptiles
4.Order- Similar families are grouped into an
order E.g Carnivore, Herbivora and Omnivora

5.Family- What family do they belong to? E.g


Humans belong to Hominidae, which includes
great
apes
(gorillas,
orangutans
and
chimpanzees)
6.Genus- Genus is a way to describe the
generic name for an organism
7.Species- A group of similar individuals that
can breed and produce fertile offspring
The following chart goes through the 7 levels of
classification of a Grizzly Bear. At each level, be
aware of the characteristics the different
organisms share. The kingdom is the largest
group and very broad. Each successive group
contains fewer organisms, but the organisms are
more similar.
