or economic activities to thrive the transport sector must be well oiled for a seamless
connectivity that ensures smooth mobility of people and goods from one point to the other.
Adequate infrastructure is therefore a fundamental precondition for transport systems. The
State Department of Infrastructure is engaged in numerous projects that have ensured that the
country gets quality transport infrastructure to facilitate transport activities.
The impact of transportation actually relates to the capacity to convey people and goods and
the associated costs to support this movement and this literally involves developing road
networks enabling new or existing interactions between economic entities. On the other hand
the operational part involves improvement in reliability as well as reduced loss or damage which
implies that the existing transportation assets indeed benefit users as passengers and freight are
conveyed more rapidly and without delays.
We understand that development of quality road network paves way for access to a wider market
base where economies of scale in production, distribution and consumption can be improved and
this translates to economic growth.
It is with great delight then that I take this opportunity to introduce to you the Kenya Transport and Logistics directory. This directory
bears information of stakeholders in the transport and logistics sector and other allied sectors that are vital to the main players in the
industry. As providers of infrastructure necessary for transportation, we are proud to be part of this reference book whose launch is a
milestone to the sector. We cannot dismember ourselves from the transport sector since we provide the roads that necessitate rapid
mobility and therefore we are pleased to be part of this directory.
I welcome all stakeholders in infrastructure sector to support this initiative and contribute in the directory through advertising and
publishing article on developments in your organization that contribute towards seamless connectivity.
Thank you.

he maritime sector has changed dramatically over the years. Currently globalization is in high
gear and maritime trade is growing becoming more interactive than ever before. Kenyas
maritime commerce reflects this trend.
The creation of the State Department of Shipping and Maritime affairs was indeed an idea whose
time is long overdue. Kenyas maritime sector is grappling with a myriad challenges occasioned by
neglect since the ministry of transport and infrastructure as constituted is a wide umbrella that
has hitherto focused more on roads and other projects.
This is a reprieve to all stakeholders in the logistics and maritime sector as the autonomous
state department will handle and effectively manage the operations and mitigate the diverse
challenges, threats, safety and environment. We have outlined a number of teething problems
to overcome, considering that the docket is still fresh, but we intent to toe in line with global
maritime industry in order to achieve the Vision 2030 blueprint.
We are pleased to present the Kenya Transport & Logistics Directory that conveys vital contact
information on companies that are actively involved in shipping and maritime commerce. Kenya is indeed a gateway to the landlocked
East and Central Africa countries as all their imported goods come through the port of Mombasa. The introduction of this directory
hails a new era for all stakeholders in the sector who wish to publicize and market their products and services to their clientele across
the region.
Indeed the directory plays a fundamental role by providing a medium where major actors in the maritime sector can strengthen their
market share through advertising and sharing information on shipping and shipping services while expounding on development of
various innovative and competitive solutions in the manufacture of equipment, shipbuilding, logistics and marine transport services.
As we embark on turning around maritime commerce, I extend my gratitude to all institutions under this docket that advertised in
this edition. I also urge all stakeholders in the maritime to use this directory as a platform to advertising your products and services
as well as publish articles on projects you have accomplished or are in the pipeline in order to consolidate this important sector and
ultimately spur Kenyas economy.
Thank you.

LAPSSET
INTRODUCTION
The LAPSSET Corridor Program is among
the top Infrastructure Projects championed
under the African Unions Presidential Infrastructure Championship Initiative (PICI),
having been admitted to that status during
the African Union Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee meeting of
the 32nd Summit of the AU General Assembly, held in January 2015, in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia.
The LAPSSET Corridor connects the East
Coast of the African Continent from Lamu
Port, to the West Coast of the Continent at
Douala and linking to the Douala- Lagos
native transport corridor and offering a platform for opening up the vast northern parts
of Kenya consisting of over 70% of the land
space which to date remains undeveloped.

and the rest of the corridor. The fiber optic
cable is planned to run along the corridor,
connecting all the major cities, towns and
regions in Lamu, Garsen, Isiolo, Turkana,
Marsabit and the rest of the corridor.
Nine new cities are currently under
planning in the LAPSSET Corridor Project
area to transform the area into an economic
productive investment zone.
The project will help the region create capacity in infrastructure industry from human, technological, financial and consumers in the country. Countries like China,
India, Malaysia, Brazil, Iran and Singapore
among others have used this model to
adapt technology and train their manpower while building capacity in their delivery
institutions.

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS AND
RESORT CITIES
Three international Airports and resort cities
are planned to be located in Isiolo, Lamu
and Turkana. Construction of intermediate
Airport facilities has been completed for
Manda Airport in Lamu while construction
is at completion stage for Isiolo Airport.
The resort cities are at the planning stage.
Resort cities have an EIRR of 20.8% while
airports have an EIRR of 20%.The international Airports and resort cities will be developed and operated by private sector under
PPP law on concession basis.
Manda Airport
The project will help strengthen socio-economic base of Kenya by improving infrastructure as the key backbone of the
Kenyan economy. Continued investment
in infrastructure has seen the country recovering that resulted in a jumpstart from a
marginal 1.6 to 2.6 and 5.8 per cent growth
in 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively to a
steady growth of 4.4%, 4.6%, 5.7% and
5.8% (est) growth in 2011, 2012, 2013 and
2014 respectively.
The project will open up the pastoral regions particularly in the north of Kenya that
will now be the next growth frontier for the
entire economy and will make tremendous
strides towards facilitating socio-economic
development with the completion of these
key infrastructure projects.
It will lead to increase in electric power generation through various energy initiatives
such as green, clean and renewable energy to improve reliability in electric power
supply to support faster rate of industrialization and inter country electricity supply
such as the envisaged Kenya -Ethiopia
electricity power agreement.
It will facilitate attraction of increased private sector investment in infrastructure development and management in the country.
Currently, there are a number of private
sector involvements particularly in the energy, water and railway sub-sectors. More
private sector investments are being explored in roads, railways, ports and water
services.

Ngumi who was previously the lead transaction adviser for the deal, confirms that
KPC has contracted a consortium comprising CfC Stanbic, Commercial Bank of Africa, Citi Bank, Cooperative Bank of Kenya,
Standard Chartered Bank and South Africas RMB Bank to raise the funds for project. The penning of the agreement made it
one of the single largest loans for a state
corporation that would be used to finance
the construction of the new pipeline - one
of the Vision 2030 flagship projects.
The 10-year loan carries with it highly competitive terms. It bears a margin of 5.38 per
cent over LIBOR rates to the financing cost
on the recent Kenya Government $2 billion
Eurobond issue. LIBOR rate stands for Intercontinental Exchange London Interbank
Offered Rate, a benchmark fee that some
of the worlds leading banks charge each
other for short-term loans and serves as the
first step in calculating interest rates on various loans throughout the world.
The loan was secured only on KPCs assets
and reputation and was not guaranteed
by the government. This reaffirms KPCs
reputation as a highly regarded borrower
due to its ability to attract capital from both
local and foreign banks.

under industry regulations. The larger storage facility in Nairobi will reduce delays in
importation of products as well as improve
Open Tendering System (OTS) by removing
restrictions on quantities of products that
can be imported.
Persistent fuel shortages have frequently hit
the country that is heavily dependent on the
commodity for transport, power generation and agriculture. Refined oil has to be
trucked to neighbouring land-locked countries, meaning extra expense for consumers. Road transport is slow and unreliable
due to the breakdown of trucks and damaged roads. Petroleum dealers say the expansion of KPCs terminal in Nairobi would
help address the congestion at Kipevu and
boost supplies in the capital and beyond.
The project has also created employment
opportunities especially for engineers.
Zakhems construction contract stipulates
a given threshold of both skilled and unskilled workers. At the present supervision
phase, the contractor has engaged four
civil engineers, four mechanical engineers,
two pipeline engineers, a Non-Destructive
Testing expert, a surveyor and an electronic
engineer. They have also procured the services of two safety engineers, two Quality
Assurance/Quality Control engineers.
As hopes rise with the advent of the regions
largest white oil pipeline, the words of KPC
Acting Managing Director Flora Okoth aptly capture the moment.
With the new pipeline and the expansion of
KPCs infrastructure, we will see an increase
in refined petroleum product transportation and storage which will in turn drive
the regions economy. KPC remains committed to providing services to the region in
a sustainable, environmentally conscious
and socially responsible manner, she says
noting that the company is constantly humbled by the realization of the impact that
KPC has on the lives of the people of Kenya
and beyond. The country has bestowed
on KPC a great responsibility to safeguard
its fossil fuel energy requirements and the
new pipeline will accord us our new status
as Africas premier Oil and Gas Company,
she declares.

GENERAL INFORMATION
KTLD 2016
The transport and infrastructure sectors are fundamental in the promotion of socio-economic activities and development since an efficient and effective, transport system is a mainspring for rapid and
sustained development in terms of national, regional and international
integration, trade facilitation, poverty reduction and improvement of
welfare of the Kenyan citizens. The Ministry is therefore divided into
two major departments namely; State Department of Transport and
State Department of Infrastructure.
With a vision to be global leader in transport infrastructure and logistics and a mission to develop, operate and sustain world class transport infrastructure and services, the ministry is divided in three major
departments including the state department of Transport, State department of Infrastructure and state department of maritime.
The Cabinet Secretary in charge of the Ministry of transport and infrastructure is Mr. James Macharia flanked by two Principal Secretaries
namely Eng. John Mosonik for Infrastructure, Wilson Nyakera Irungu
for transport and Nancy Kirigithu for Maritime.
Other key heads include infrastructure Secretary, Eng. P. Kilimo and
Director of Administration Mrs. Janet Mucheru.
The ministry is mandated to several functions which include; National
Roads Development Policy Management, Transport Policy Management, Maritime Transport Management, Rail Transport and Infrastructure Management, Development, Standardization and Maintenance
of Roads, Mechanical and Transport Services, Enforcement of Axle
Load Control, Materials Testing and Advice on Usage, Standardization of Vehicles, Plant and Equipment, Civil Aviation Management and
Training, Registration of Engineers, Registration of Roads Contractors,
Protection of Road Reserves, Maintenance of Security Roads, National
Road Safety Management, Registration and Insurance of Motor Vehicles, Motor Vehicles Inspection, Development and Maintenance of
Airstrips, Government Clearing and Forwarding Service (Coast Agent),
National Transport and Safety Policy and Implementation of LAPSSET
Project.
The transport sector in Kenya is stratified into four modes of transport
namely road, rail, sea and air transport, with established state corporations and authorities involved in regulation of the sector that is superior compared to the rest of East African states.
The sector continues to grow in leaps and bounds and is now considered the back bone of Kenyas economy and by a large extent, East Africas as well. This has been informed by the elaborate infrastructural
developments witnessed across the country coupled with a positive
change in institutions manning various departments of the sector.
Infrastructure
A key task of this Ministry is to position Kenya as the logistics hub of
the region by creating a modern and efficient transport system for
goods and services within the Counties and also with other countries
in the region.
Kenya has witnessed major reforms in development of transport infrastructure thanks to the institutions under the ministry through the
state department of infrastructure. These institutions are involved
autonomously in development and maintenance of the infrastructure
that drives the transport sector. These are Kenya National Highways
Authority, Kenya Urban Roads Authority, Kenya Rural Roads Authority,
Kenya Roads Board and Engineers Board of Kenya.

Maritime
Kenya is the gateway to East and Central Africa landlocked hinterlands,
opening up the region through the port of Mombasa and Lamu port.
Millions of tons of cargo come enter the region through these ports
and therefore the Logistics sector depends much on the efficiency at
the port. The Government has worked out modalities and created the
state of Maritime affairs that now oversees all maritime activities. Institutions under this department include; Kenya Ports Authority (KPA),
Kenya Ferry Services (KFS), Kenya National Shipping Line (KNSL) and

A model of excellence
KCAAs vision is pegged on the aspiration
and vision to be a model of excellence in
the civil aviation industry and efforts fronted by the authority are starting to pay off.
According to the DG, the Authority has
significantly made giant leaps that have
seen it take off to international recognition. Captain Kibe points out a number
of achievements that have propelled the
authority to international recognition. He
says KCAA has significantly increased
in the level of implementation of ICAO
Standards as evidenced by the good performance in the 2013 ICAO Audit of the
State where the level of implementation
improved from 66.2% to 78.42% placing
Kenya among the top quarter States Globally and among the top 4 in Africa.
The DG explains that the election of Kenya to the ICAO Council has also seen the
country recognized globally as an important country in international air transport.
Kenya now is a member of the 36 States
that sit on the ICAO council which is the
body that sets the agenda for international
air transport, declares Kibe.
Kenya has been selected to be the seat of
the Centre for Aviation Medicine for the
East Africa Community (EAC) and Kibe
affirms that KCAA is currently working towards setting up the Center with the support of the Government.
On the other hand the East African School
of Aviation (EASA) which is the training
arm of KCAA is in the process of being
accessed to be designated as a Regional
Centre of Excellence in Aviation training.
If this happens it will be a great achievement for the School which we are investing in so as to meet the demands of the
industry both locally and internationally,
the DG mulls.

GENERAL INFORMATION
KTLD 2016
ast Africas geographical setup is dotted with an undulating topography with rough
terrains that require tough tyres to maneuver through the not so up to standard
roads. This means transporters must invest heavily in tyres if they must deliver
their clients cargo on time.
For sure, tyres are the only parts on a vehicle that actually touches the road meaning
that they control the vehicles steering, breaking, acceleration and absorption of bumps
along the road. Therefore good quality tyres are essential to your driving experience.
There are many different types of tyres available in the market and not all of them provide the same levels of performance. Some tyres provide much better traction in wet
weather, while others provide smoother rolling at high speeds for better fuel consumption and reduced noise.
Finding the Right Tyres
It is of great import that you pick tyres that are well suited for the conditions of the
roads on which you drive most. A lot of people choose budget tyres in the name of cost
saving, forgetting that cheap tyres go bald quicker, increases fuel consumption and do
not grip the road as well.
Remember tyres are not manufactured equally and thus it pays to ensure that the tyres
you are looking to buy match your requirements. For those who do a lot of motorway
driving may probably want tyres that grip better at higher speeds as opposed to those
who do countryside driving as they will go for tyres that can easily ranges and rough terrains owing to their tougher compound that makes them longer lasting and with better
grip than budget tyres.
Maintaining Your Tyres
Whichever tyres you buy several checks need to be carried
out regularly to prevent damage or excessive wear.
Carry out the following checks at least once a month:
Tyre Pressure
Check the tyre pressure since underinflated tyres will give
you less control and are bound to increase the braking
distance and more so will wear much faster, while overinflated tyres are equally dangerous as they reduce grip,
destabilize braking and lessens control leading to dangerous driving situations on the road.
Tread depth
Check tread depth the legal minimum is 1.6mm for normal tyres but it is advisable to change tyres when it is less
than 3 mm, or 4 mm for winter/wet seaoson tyres.
Bulges
Look out for bulges or cracks in the tyre and Check if there
is uneven wear
For tyre pressure that is not a big problem because you can
do it yourself at home or at any petrol station. However if
you notice any of the other issues then it is time to replace
your tyres immediately.

GENERAL INFORMATION

A fleet of trucks in a yard after commissioning. It is important that your fleet be insured fully and in accordance with
the law to avoid disasters that can cost the company.
INSET: A truck involved in a fatal road accident
restore you to your original state. In addition, depending on the type of car insurance that you have, your
vehicle can be repaired or replaced, thus saving you
the out of pocket expense of replacing it yourself.
The last reason for having car insurance has to do
with repair of the other vehicle if you hit someone. As
you know, vehicle repairs can be very expensive. If
you are shown to be at fault in an accident you may
be required to pay for the repairs or the replacement
of the vehicle that you hit. Again, this is money that
has to come out of your pocket.
As an aside to this, you are also responsible for any
real property damage that you might cause. For example, if you run into a house and cause a wall to
collapse, you would be required to make payment
for those repairs. One single accident can all but
force you into bankruptcy court if you are not protected by car insurance.
In Kenya there are well established firms with quality affordable policies that can help you haul without fear. Some have gone a step ahead by providing tailored policies to suit customer needs. A good
insurance does not fuss about claims settlement so
choose the best insurance with a stable capital base
to insure your precious business.

The systems have eliminated the multiple agents in the clearance process,
particularly for transit cargo, according to one Job Kemboi, the Transport
Manager at Siginon Global Logistics.
Siginon Global Logistics and Bollore
Africa Logistics are some of the international firms that had embraced
varied technologies before the State
issued the new directive. The companies executives confirm that introduction of the mandatory requirement
across the region have greatly reduced their costs by as much as Sh72,
000 per trip.
Mr. Jason Reynard, Regional Chief Executive Officer, Bollore Africa Logistics
says the Single Window System has
shortened the time that traders and
agents take to get clearance from 24
State agencies. It has successfully
tackled dumping that was a problem
faced by both authorities and importers. He says adding that this has reduced delays in transit since there is
no longer need for inspections and
physical escorts that used to drag
shipping time by up to four days.
Though regional companies have
been quoted protesting their implementation the technologies have been
fairly easy for the multinational firms

keptics have been proven wrong thanks to the impressive progress of the Standard Gauge Railway
(SGR) line for passenger and cargo transportation
whose construction commenced in 2013. Going by the
timelines set, the progress is indeed commendable.
The railway line which will have a uniform design specification to allow for a seamless operation across the borders of East Africa will connect Mombasa to Malaba with
a branch line to Kisumu onward to Kampala with a branch
line to Kasese and Juba with a branch line to Pakwach.
Construction of the line commenced in October 2013 and
is scheduled to end by December 2017. The MombasaNairobi phase of the project is estimated to costs Ksh.
327bn ($3.8bn) of which China Exim Bank will provide 90%
of while the remaining 10% will be contributed by the Kenyan Government. The SGR is a flagship project under the
Kenya Vision 2030 development agenda. It will simplify
transport operations across the borders and reduce travel
costs, apart from benefiting the economies of Kenya and
the neighbouring countries.
The governments of Kenya and Uganda signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in October 2009 to construct the SGR from Mombasa to Kampala. A tripartite
agreement was then signed by the governments of Kenya,
Uganda and Rwanda in August 2013 to fast track the development of the railway to their respective capital cities.
The Ugandan section of the SGR line was launched in October 2014. The SGR line from Mombasa to Kigali is expected to be completed by 2018. Kenya Railways Corporation is responsible for the construction of the 1,300km-long
track inside Kenya from Mombasa to Malaba via Nairobi.
Mombasa Nairobi SGR
On completion, the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR; the biggest
infrastructure project in Kenya since independence will
shorten the passenger travel time from Mombasa to Nairobi from more than ten hours to a slightly more than four
hours while Freight trains will complete the journey in less
than eight hours. The single-track standard gauge railway
between Mombasa and Nairobi will have a route length
of 472km and a total length of 609km running through the
counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Taita-Taveta, Makueni,
Kajiado, Machakos and Nairobi.
