Heuristic: Body Mass Index Calculator

The document defines body mass index (BMI) as an individual's body mass divided by the square of their height, which is used as a proxy for estimating body fat percentage. It provides the metric (kg/m2) and imperial (pounds/inches2 x 703) formulas for calculating BMI based on a person's weight and height. Finally, it includes a scale for interpreting BMI scores, categorizing scores under 18.5 as underweight, 18.5-24.9 as normal weight, 25-29.9 as overweight, and 30 or higher as obese (classes I, II and III).

ANNEX D TO
COMMANDANTS RESEARCH PAPER
DATED 24 SEPTEMBER 2012
BODY MASS INDEX CALCULATOR

1.

The body mass index (BMI), or Quetelet index, is a heuristic proxy for human

body fat based on an individual's weight and height. BMI does not actually measure the
percentage of body fat. It was devised between 1830 and 1850 by the Belgian polymath
Adolphe Quetelet 2 during the course of developing "social physics". Body mass index is
defined as the individual's body mass divided by the square of his or her height. The
formulae universally used in medicine produce a unit of measure of kg/m2. BMI can also
be determined using a BMI chart3, which displays BMI as a function of weight
(horizontal axis) and height (vertical axis) using contour lines for different values of BMI
or colors for different BMI categories.28

Judge your personal BMI result against the following scale:

a.

A BMI of 15 and below you are very under weight.

b.

A BMI of less than 18 means you are under weight.

c.

A BMI of less than 18.5 indicates you are thin for your height.

d.

A BMI between 18.6 and 24.9 indicates you are at a healthy weight.

e.

A BMI between 25 and 29.9 suggests you are over weight for your height.

f.

A BMI between 30 and 34.9 indicates you are obese.

g.

A BMI of 35 and above indicates you are very obese.
