Cooperative Learning 1 (Question A) : Kkkq2123/2124 Engineering Mathematics Iii (Differential Equations) SEM I 20162017

This document contains 4 questions from an engineering mathematics course on differential equations. Question A involves calculating the concentration of salt in a tank over time given inflow and outflow rates. Question B involves solving a differential equation describing the charging of a capacitor in an electrical circuit. Question C requires determining the time of a murder based on measurements of a corpse's cooling temperature. Question D uses a logistic differential equation to model population growth over time in a suburb.

KKKQ2123/2124 ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS III (DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS)

SEM I 20162017

COOPERATIVE LEARNING 1
(Question A)
A tank initially contains 600 litres of pure water in which 40 kg of salt per litre is dissolved.
A mixture containing a concentration of kg/litre of salt enters the tank at a rate of 25litres/min,
and the well-stirred mixture leaves the tank at a rate of 50litres/min.
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)

Draw a diagram based on the scenario above.

Find an expression in terms of in the tank at any time t.
1
If kg/litre, when will the tank empty? Justify your answer.
5
With the same concentration in (b), determine the amount of salt remain in the tank
after 10 minutes.

(Question B)
Figure 2 shows a circuit consisting of a resistor of R ohms, a capacitor of C farads, and a battery
of voltage V. When the circuit is completed, the amount of charge q(t) (in coulombs) on the
plates of the capacitor varies according to the differential equation (t in seconds).

Figure 2

(a)

Write a differential equation for the amount of charge q(t) and solve the equation,
assuming q(0) = 0.

(b)

What happens to the q(t) as t ?

(c)

State the transient and steady state component.

(d)

Assume that R = 200, C = 0.02F, and V = 12V. How many seconds does it take for
the charge on the capacitor plates to reach of its limiting value?

(Question C)

In a number investigation, a corpse was found by a detective at exactly 8 PM. Being alert, the
detective also measured the body temperature and found it to be 70o F. Two hours later, the
detective measured the body temperature again and found it to be 60 o F. If the room
temperature is 50o F, and assuming that the body temperature of the person before death was
98.6o F, at what time did the murder occur?

(Question D)

The number P(t) of people in a suburb of Cardiff is governed by the logistic equation
dP
rP 1 10 5 P
dt

where t is measured in years and r > 0 is called the intrinsic growth.

(a)

Can the population ever be greater than 200,000?

(b)

Find and classify the equilibrium points.

(c)

Suppose the population went from 10,000 in 1992 to 50,000 in 2012. Determine the
constant r and predict what the population will be in 2017.
