MSC Project Proposal

This MSc project involves performing measurements on two electron spin qubits in silicon to demonstrate a high fidelity two qubit gate. The student will acquire skills in cryogenic DC measurements on nanoscale devices and microwave electronics for spin qubit manipulation. The goal is to address challenges like decoherence from nuclear spin interactions and poorly defined valley states that impact scaling up silicon-based quantum computers. The student should have a background in quantum mechanics and solid state physics.

MSc Project:

Two coupled spin qubits in silicon

Background:
A quantum computer promises to provide solutions to problems that are too difficult to solve even with
modern-day supercomputers. The building block of a quantum computer is a quantum bit (qubit) which is
a well-defined two level quantum system. In the Vandersypen lab we study electron spins bound to
quantum dots as qubits as they can be easily measured and manipulated and are potentially scalable. A
major challenge for any qubit system is to minimise the loss of the qubit information to the environment
known as decoherence. For electron spins, the dominant source of decoherence is through the interaction
with the host materials nuclear spin bath. Recent work has shown that silicon is an ideal host material for
electron spin qubits as it has a naturally low abundance of nuclear spins and it can be isotopically purified
to be 28Si which is nuclear spin free. One of the major challenges with silicon based devices is to control the
valley degree of freedom as it can lead to poorly defined qubit states.

The project:
In this experimental project you will perform measurements on two electron spin qubits in a SiGe
heterostructure. This project will be focused on demonstrating a high fidelity two qubit gate in this
system.
Skills you will acquire:
Cryogenic DC measurements on nanoscale devices.
Microwave electronics for the manipulation of spin qubits.
