QUIZ NO.1: Kinematics of Particles Problem Statement: Data & Diagram

The document is a quiz on kinematics of particles for a dynamics course. It involves calculating the (a) velocity and acceleration of a package when it reaches point B on a conveyor belt moving with uniform acceleration, and (b) the velocity and time for the package to reach point C. The solution shows the package's velocity at B is 6 m/s and its acceleration is the sum of the conveyor belt's acceleration and the normal acceleration. It then calculates the package reaches C after 1.975 seconds with a velocity of 7.90 m/s.

QUIZ NO.1: Kinematics of Particles. Note : Format of EPSM 3 marks

Problem statement: A package which is initially at

Data & Diagram:

rest at A on an industrial conveyor belt moves with a

uniform acceleration of 4 m/s2.

Find:
(a) Determine the velocity and acceleration of
the package when it arrives at position B.
[7 marks]
(b) Determine the velocity and time for the
package to arrive at position C.
[7 marks]

Assumption(s):
1) No relative motion between the package and the
belt (i.e. no slippage)
[+ 1]
Theory: Uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion from A to B and curvilinear motion from B to C with at
= constant
[+ 1]

Solution:

Motion A to B: Given a = 4 m/s2 = constant

[+ 1]

At B, we have
v2 = vo2 + 2a(s so)

[+ 1]

v2 = (0)2 + 2 (4) (4.5 0)

or

v = 6 m/s => vB = 6 m/s

[+ 1]
and

aB = (aB)t + (aB)n

So we have,

where (aB)t = 4 m/s2 and (aB)n =

(aB)t = 4 m/s2 [+ 1]

Total acceleration at B,

where so = 0 m, and s = 4.5 m

and

v B2

Motion B to C: Knowing

(aB)n = 17.14 m/s2

aB = (aB)t + (aB)n = 4 m/s2 + 17.14 m/s2

[+ 1] Comments:
Velocity and acceleration at C can also be determined by considering the motion from A to C.
