A survey commissioned recently suggests that the

notion of a job for life is disappearing rapidly. It
revealed that a quarter of people in the 1621 age
range do not expect to follow the same career for
their entire working lives. They are more interested
in following different careers at different stages of
their lives than always doing the same thing.
Traditionally, people began a particular job or
profession after school or university and continued
to work until their sixties. Some think that the
situation then was better than it is now. Peoples
lives arent as secure as they used to be, says
Trevor Small, 72. How can you make plans if you
dont know whether your job will continue to exist?
On the other hand, many young people are excited
by the possibilities. I just couldnt do the same thing
for forty or fifty years, says Victoria Reilly. Id get so
bored with it. I want to be able to change careers or
even take some time out to go travelling. There are
all sorts of opportunities in the voluntary sector. Im
applying for a work placement for an overseas
charity so that I can see something of the world.
People complain about not having job security, but
lifes more challenging and varied that way.
