Going solo
A
Whats the most amazing thing youve ever done?
Teenager Mike Perham has just returned from the
trip of a lifetime. The seventeen-year-old has
become the youngest person to sail solo around
the world.
B
During 158 days at sea, he has tackled huge waves
and strong winds, as well as technical problems on
board his fifty-foot yacht. His family are, of course,
very relieved that he has arrived back safely. Peter,
Mikes dad, has been involved in fundraising, as the
trip was very expensive.
C
While lots of teenagers have celebrated their
birthdays on holiday, its unlikely that many have
turned seventeen in the South Pacific Ocean, miles
from anywhere. Mike also had far less sleep than
the average teenager. He could only sleep for 20
minutes at a time. While he was sleeping, an
automatic pilot took over the controls of the boat.
D
Its clear that Mike has displayed a great deal of
courage and determination. The mental and
physical stamina that an achievement like this
requires would be impressive even in an older
person with more experience. Its unfortunate that
he wasnt able to complete the trip non-stop as
planned. Perhaps that will be his next challenge.
