Q.6 Answer both parts of the following:

(i)

(ii)

Derive an expression for the factor of safety of an infinite slope

in a cohesionless soil.

A cut 10m deep is to be made in a stratum of cohesive (c = 35

kN/m2, = 18.5 kN/m3 and = 0). The bed rock is located 15 m
below the original ground surface. Determine the factor of safety
against failure if the slope is 300. For DF= 1.5 and i= 300, the
stability number is equal to 0.164.

CVL726: ADVANCED SOIL MECHANICS
Time : 03 Hours

Maximum Marks : 100

Note : 1. Attempt all sections.

2. All questions carry equal marks.

SECTION-C
Q.7 (i)A clay layer 5 m thick has double drainage. It was consolidated
under a load of 127.5 kN/m2. The load is increased to 197.5
kN/m2. The coefficient of volume compressibility is 5.79 104
m2/kN and value of k = 1.6 108 m/min. Find total settlement
and settlement at 50% consolidation. If the test sample is 2 cm
thick and attains 100% consolidation in 24 hours, what is the
time taken for 100% consolidation in the actual layer ?
(ii) A bed of sand 12 m thick is underlain by a compressible
stratum of normally loaded clay, 6 m thick. The water table is at
a depth of 5 m below the ground level. The bulk densities of sand
above and below the water table are 17.5 kN/m 3 and 20.5 kN/m3
respectively. The clay has a natural water content of 40% and LL
of 45%. G = 2.75. Estimate the probable final settlement if the
average increment in pressure due to a footing is 100 kN/m 2.

Q.1 Answer all parts of the following:

(i) What is difference between the absorbed water and adsorbed water
in soil structure?
(ii)

Draw the contact pressure distribution diagram for flexible and

rigid footings on sand and clayey soils.

(iii) Discuss the shear strength characteristics of cohesionless soils

and cohesive soils.
(iv) A line load of 90 kN/metre run extends to a long distance.
Determine the intensity of vertical stress at point 1.5 metres
below the surface (i) directly under the line load and (ii) at a
distance 1 m perpendicular to the line. Use Boussinesqs theory.

(v) Distinguish between normally consolidated and over consolidated
soils.

Q.2 Answer all parts of the following:

(ii) In a consolidation test on a soil, the void ratio of the sample

decreased from 1.25 to 1.10 when the pressure is increased from
200 kN/m2 to 400 kN/m2. Calculate the coefficient of
consolidation if the coefficient of permeability is 8 x 10-8 cm/sec.

(i) Discuss the characteristics and the construction of Kaolinite,

Montmorillonite and Illite mineral groups.

(iii) What is Mohrs circle? Discuss its important characteristics.

(ii)

(v) A granular soil is subjected to a minor principal stress of 200

kN/m2. If the angle of internal friction is 30, determine the
inclination of the plane of failure with respect to the direction of the
major principal stress. What are the stresses on the plane of failure
and the maximum shear stress induced?

A direct shear test was performed on a 6 cm x 6 cm sample of

dry sand. The normal load was 360 N. The failure occurred at a
shear load of 180 N. Plot the Mohr strength envelope, and
determine . Assume c = 0. Also determine the principal stresses
at failure.

(iii) A sand deposit is 10 m thick and overlies a bed of soft clay. The
ground water table is 3 m below the ground surface. If the sand
above the ground water table has a degree of saturation of 45%,
plot the diagram showing the variation of total stress, pore water
pressure and the effective stress. The void ratio of the sand is
0.70. Take G = 2.65.
(iv) A cutting is to be made in a soil with a slope of 30 to the
horizontal and a depth of 15 m. The properties of the soil are: c =
25 kN/m2, = 15, and = 19.1 kN/m 3. Determine the factor of
safety of the slope against slip, assuming friction and cohesion to
be mobilised to the same proportion of their ultimate values.
(v) The compression diagram for a precompressed clay indicates
that it had been compressed under a pressure of 240 kN/m 2. The
compression index is 0.9; its void ratio under a pressure of 180
kN/m2 is 1.5. Estimate the void ratio if the pressure is increased
to 360 kN/m2.
