The Philippine Performance Archive project aims to create a multimedia archive of Philippine cultural performances. The seminar featured several speakers discussing aspects of the project. Sir Arnil Pineda Tiatco discussed introducing the project and defining cultural performances. Madilene Landicho discussed research methods for studying theater, linguistics, and anthropology. Jem Javier discussed the development of linguistics. Finally, Paolo Amascual shared their experiences gathering performances in different regions and the challenges of the project.

An Introduction
Archiving Cultural Performances
The 1st speaker, Sir Arnil Pineda Tiatco Ph.D, a leader of Cultural Performance Team
tackled about An Introduction of The Philippine Performance Archive. Their team
organized a Digital Humanities Project which aims to create a multimedia and text
archive of the Philippine performances which is composed of four parts. These are the
Cultural Performances, Dance, Theater, Bibliography then te streaming of video
recordings, photographs and documentations of the different cultural performances they
gathered in different regions. The said project aims to develop an archive of the
Philippine Cultural performances such as rituals, festivals, traditions and related
performances and scholarship resource materials that they will going to provide in
different schools as compiled.
Sir Arnil gave us the meaning of the Cutural Performance which means that occasions in
which as a culture or a society, we reflect upon and define ourselves, dramatize our
connective myths and history, a definition according to John Mckenzie from Perfom or
Else. Cultural performances includes theatrical events such as plays and concerts, then
performance studies like prayers, ritual readings and recitations and ritual ceremonies of
different religious group. Then the basic information of it, the context, perception and
multimedia resources. Those are the things needed for us to be able to have the wholeness
of the cultural performance and for us to get the essence of the performance. Also there
are five foundation of the cultural performance, these are the time span or how long the
performance will take, then ofcourse the cultural stage on where the performers will
perform, the organized program or the flow of the play, the performers and lastly the
audiences. These are the things which will complete the performance, without any of it
then there is no cultural performance that will happen.

Methods for Theater Studies, Linguistics and Anthropology

Madilene B. Landicho
The next speaker who is Ms. Madilene b. Landicho, tackled about the methods used for
theatrical studies, linguistics and anthropology. As an introduction, she defined first the
Ethnography which came from the greek word ethnos meaning people or group of people
and graphos meaning writings about. Then when you combined the two the meaning
would be writings about the people or group of people. It is a detailed description of the
group being studied. The different methods are Participant observation which takes a
longer period of time typically a year for you should be immersed with them to study
their cultural behavior. Then we have the In-depth interview, Focus group discussion
where in you triangulate the data by comparing it. Conventional method it is a long stay
in the field. The next topic she tackled about are the hindrances or the limitations of the
project which are fund, time, number of researches and ofcourse the money.

Development of Linguistics
Ms. Jem Javier
The next speaker Ms. Jem Javier shared to us about the Development of Linguistics.
Se said that meanings are relativized to scenes, that it has a an internal structure, relative
to background frame or a scenes. Social Convention meaning the sign molded by a
specific history of the community. Decontextualization are words transferred from one
context to a new context within a specific universe of discourse. The use of Frame
semantic which is a system of related concepts to understand any of them and to
understand the whole structure.

Paolo T. Amascual
Mr. Paolo T. Amascual shared to us their team wonderful experience by gathering the
different Culltural Performances in the Philippines as their project of archiving it. He
tackled first the background of their team, how the project is developed, then their
purpose why they chose to be here in Naga City as the celebration of the Penafrancia
Fiesta is near approaching. They travelled and targets to go to many different provinces
and different regions that ae rich in culture for their project to archive the cultural
performances there. There are many places they went and they shared to us the
documentations theyve got there. I was really amazed how wonderful different cultures
and traditions are. The celebration was really a sign of their devotion and passion to it.
Though there are lots of challenges the team had encountered such as the government
transaction, hiding the performances, gatkeepers, esearch period, and cultural differences,
it seems that the group was really eager to pursue and finish the project that they started.
It is a huge help for students and their co-researchers to find documents regarding the
Cultural Performances in the Philippines as it is very accessible because it is now
archived and can be searched in the internet.
We can see how Philippine Culture is very rich because of the help of the project.
