AQA Mechanics 1 Force

Section 1: Forces and equilibrium

Exercise
1. Find the resultant of two forces of magnitudes 12 N and 5 N respectively if the
angle between them is 90.
2. Find the resultant of two forces of magnitude 2 N and 7 N respectively if the
angle between them is 30.
3. Find the angle between the lines of action of two forces of magnitude 7 N and
12 N given that the resultant has a magnitude of 9 N.
4. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the sum of the three forces
represented by 2i 5j, 3j, and i + 2j.

8. A particle of weight 40 N is attached to the end of a light inextensible string of

length 2 m. The other end of the string is attached to a vertical wall. The particle
is held at a distance of 1.2 m from the wall by a horizontal force F. Find the
magnitude of F and the tension in the string
9. A small weight of 20 N is at rest on a smooth plane inclined at 30 to the
horizontal. It is held in position by a light rope. The angle between the rope and
the plane is 20. Find the tension in the rope and the reaction at the plane.
10. A body of mass 8 kg is held at rest on a smooth plane inclined at 60 to the
horizontal by a force F. Find F given that it acts
a) horizontally
b) vertically upwards
c) parallel to the plane.
11. A block of weight 20 N is held at rest on a smooth plane inclined at 20 to the
horizontal by a string that makes angle with the plane. If the tension in the
string is 10 N find and the reaction between the block and the plane.
