Elasticity

This document contains 3 problems regarding elasticity. Problem 1 asks about the price elasticity of demand for a new product called the Gillooly Shillelagh given its demand function. Problem 2 examines the effects of a per unit tax on the equilibrium price of fiberglass truck hoods given the own price elasticity of demand and price elasticity of supply. Problem 3 determines the equilibrium price and sales of product X given its inverse demand and supply functions which include the price of a related product Y.

Elasticity: Problem set

1. Harding Enterprises has developed a new product called the Gillooly Shillelagh. The
market demand for this product is given as follows:
Q = 240 - 4P
a.
b.
c.
d.

At what price is the price elasticity of demand equal to zero?

At what price is demand infinitely elastic?
At what price is the price elasticity of demand equal to one?
If the shillelagh is priced at $40, what is the point price elasticity of demand?

2. Midcontinent Plastics makes 80 fiberglass truck hoods per day for large truck
manufacturers. Each hood sells for $500.00. Midcontinent sells all of its product to the
large truck manufacturers. Suppose the own price elasticity of demand for hoods is - 0.4
and the price elasticity of supply is 1.5.
a. Compute the slope and intercept coefficients for the linear supply and demand
equations.
b. If the local county government imposed a per unit tax of $25.00 per hood
manufactured, what would be the new equilibrium price of hoods to the truck
manufacturer?
c. Would a per unit tax on hoods change the revenue received by Midcontinent?
3. The inverse demand curve for product X is given by:
PX = 25 - 0.005Q + 0.15PY,
where PX represents price in dollars per unit, Q represents rate of sales in pounds per
week, and PY represents selling price of another product Y in dollars per unit. The
inverse supply curve of product X is given by: PX = 5 + 0.004Q.
a. Determine the equilibrium price and sales of X. Let PY = $10.
b. Determine whether X and Y are substitutes or complements.
