Divergent Questions

The document discusses several topics related to the Divergent book series: 1) Beatrice is not always a reliable narrator as she ignores signs and does not question certain events, but she does consider other characters' emotions. 2) While the faction system makes sense by assigning jobs to factions, it leaves holes like what faction would teachers belong to since they require multiple qualities. 3) The factionless are those who did not complete their chosen faction's initiation, decided to leave, or were kicked out, similar to the homeless in real life.

Divergent questions

1. Beatrice is not a reliable narrator because she tells her

interpretation of events and often ignores obvious signs, in
chapter 31 she is injected with a tracking device and does
not question it but later on all of Dauntless are turned into
ruthless mind-controlled soldiers. Although she tells the
story as she sees she sometimes considers the other
characters emotions which adds depth to the story.

2. The faction system does make sense but leaves a lot of

holes such as which faction would be given a job which
needs you to have more than two qualities such as a
teacher where you are required to be smart, kind and
selfless. Most jobs can be broken down into the five
factions such as Candor being judges, Abnegation being
charity workers, Amity being farmers, Dauntless being
police and Erudite being scientists.

3. The Factionless are the people that do not complete their

chosen factions initiation, decided to leave or been kicked
out. People in the real world that would be described as
factionless are the homeless or people living in a housing
commission with low incomes and an unreliable job.

4. Divergent is set in a future dystopia in Chicago. Towards

the end of Divergent and the beginning of Insurgent it
states that the world had gone into war and the world was
experimenting using different cities making different
societies that would be functioning and peaceful. Although
it started out as a perfect utopia, it slowly turned into a
dystopia as the system became corrupted and the people
lost their freedom. This book does give out a warning that

we should not try to silence a humans desire for freedom

and curiosity.

5. The way Divergent left a lot of things unexplained made

you want to read and buy the next book because it leaves
you questioning things such as why there is a wall around
the city and is there anything beyond that wall. This made
me believe the world a bit less because it seemed that
everyone didnt know anything about the place they lived
and were not curious about it either.

6. The most important relationship that Beatrice has in the

book is the one between her and Tobias, her boyfriend. This
has resulted in her risking her own life when Jeanine put
Tobias under a simulation , instead of shooting him Beatrice
risked her own life to save him.

7. The bullies such as Peter, Molly and Drew in Tris class

are misguided and jealous; they have been taught by the
dauntless leaders to be selfish and are arrogant and rude.
At some points in the book it seems that they are jealous of
Tris because she is becoming the best and has kind
supportive friends. The leaders like Jeanine and Eric are
condescending and arrogant and that rubs off on some of
the initiates like Peter, Molly and Drew.

8. The way Tris describes who she is and what she thinks
about herself helps us to understand how she is
progressing and how she is learning more about herself and
in turn helps us understand what shes going through
better.
