2 Company Background
2.1 History

Attock Refinery Limited (ARL) was incorporated as a Private Limited

Company in November, 1978 to take over the business of the Attock Oil
Company Limited (AOC) relating to refining of crude oil and supplying of
refined petroleum products. It was subsequently converted into a Public
Limited Company in June, 1979 and is listed on the three Stock
Exchanges of the country. The Company is also registered with Central
Depository Company of Pakistan Limited (CDC).
Original paid-up capital of the Company was 80 million which was
subscribed by the holding company i.e. AOC, Government of Pakistan,
investment companies and general public. The present paid-up capital
of the Company is 852.93 million.
Attock Refinery located at Rawalpindi, Punjab, Pakistan was on the verge of
bankruptcy and collapse but was surviving on Government of Pakistan
subsidy. In mid-1997, Mr. Raziuddin was hired as CEO of Attock Refinery.
Within 6 months he stabilized the production and finances of ARL. But
Mr. Raziuddin along with his most trusted adviser Mohammad Ahmed
Jamal achieved commercial operation 35 days before the targeted date
and some 7% below budget. Raziuddin took the refinery from 18,700
barrels per day (bpd) to 45,000 bpd in less than 3 years. The profitability
increased tremendously. The loans were paid off earlier than schedule.
The profitability multiplied due to optimization of production dynamics
and maintenance and financial prudence. Through this cash generation
Attock Refinery was able to buy National Refinery Ltd. When
Government privatizes it and also put a 165 MW IPP Power plant to feed
the grid. Both these investments have brought tremendous profitability
to the Attock Group. It processes almost 70% of the local crude oil.
ARLs current Expansion/ Up-gradation Projects comprise of Preflash
Unit, Naphtha Isomerization unit, Diesel Hydro Desulphurization (DHDS)
Unit and expansion of existing Captive Power Plant. This would increase
refinery capacity by 10,400 bpd, motor gasoline production would
increase by 20,000 Tons per month and would enable ARL to produce
Euro II compliant low sulfur diesel. This would also result in expansion of
captive power plant by 18 Megawatt

2.2 Organization

Attock petroleum Limited

Attock Petroleum Limited (APL), sponsored by the Pharaoh Commercial

Investment Group Limited and Attock Oil Group of Companies, started
its operations in 1997. Main objective of APL was to establish a Group
Company in downstream petroleum sector for marketing of petroleum
products in Pakistan, which historically was restricted to three major
players in this field. APL has been able to effectively penetrate the
market in a short period of time by competing with well-established
OMCs. APL is the only OMC in Pakistan belonging to a Group involved in
Oil Exploration, Production and Refining thus ideally suited to
proficiently fulfilling its customers needs.

2.2.2

Attock Cement Pakistan Limited

Karachi Stock Exchange. The company started its commercial
production on June 1, 1988. ACPLs current production capacity is
2,400 MTPD. Due to an overall surge in cement demand in the country
over the last couple of years coupled by growth in regional market,
ACPL has decided to increase its production capacity to 5,400 MTPD by
setting up a new plant with a capacity of 3,000 MTPD. The new plant is
scheduled to be completed and start trial production by January 2007.

2.2.3

Attock Gen Limited

Attock Group is dedicated in revolutionizing the way our world

addresses the ever increasing problem of energy shortage. By

3 Departments and Projects

In my tenure of 6 weeks, I was attached with Mechanical department of
plant who used to inspect the plant on daily basis. Since the
construction of plant was completed, so we used to visit plant daily and
they used to tell us about the units that being installed in plant and all
the other mechanical equipments that were installed in those units.
Our area of concern was to check whether that equipments are
working properly so that they will be as good when plant would be in
working stage. I also worked with commissioning department in which
Engineers used to tell us about commissioning of plant which includes
hydro and pneumatic testing. Maintenance Department plays a very
significant and critical role in the refinery. It includes the plants
maintenance, power plant, electrical and instrumentation, offsite
maintenance and few times they referred it to workshop for maintenance.

4 Training Summary
I do my internship in Attock Refinery Limited (ARL). Arriving timing for
internees at ARL is 6:15 am and departure time is 12:15 pm. The
duration of my internship is six weeks (25 July, 2016 to 30 August,
2016). I get my joining letter on 25 July, 2016. On first day my
supervisor gives me a lecture on safety measure which I must be taken
during my internship. Form next day to onward they take us to units
one by one and tell its configuration. Main units that are installed on
plant are as follow:

Isomerization Unit
Reformer Unit
Naphtha Hydro treater Unit
7

Crude Distillation Unit

Hydrogen Reformer
Howe Baker Unit (HBU)
Diesel Hydrodesulphurization Unit (DHDS)
Sulfur Recovery Unit (SFU)

These are the units that I visited the most in my tenure. There are
different chemical process carrying out in these units to enhance the
quality and quantity of Light Straight Run (LSR) naphtha. After the visit
they give us lecture on what we were told on site and then give us to
task to search by our own and they will ask about it later on at end of
day. There was presentation session after two or three days and we
used to tell about each and every thing that was discussed by
engineers or things that we have seen on site. We had two or three
hours on site in which we inspect the units and one by one with our
engineer and he tells us about the features installed on that unit and
what purpose they are used for.

5 Key Learning and Applicability

Being a part of Attock Refinery Limited I have learnt a lot. Before this
internship I didnt see the things physically. Although we have studied
those things in our course and we knew its theory well but we dont
know how actually it looks like and actually how it is operating/working.
In my tenure I tried to apply those concepts in filed and my supervisors
also help me in this because things are always be different on large
scale, but all the concepts are same. I never had visit of industry
before this so I dont even know whats in there and how actually
things are working on large scale.
In my tenure I have seen practical application of what I study in my
course. When we apply those concepts in field at large scale, although
we face some queries but end results are same. So I can say that its
applicable to what I study back in my courses.

6 How Internship has affected my Career Goals?

Before doing my internship I was quite confused about future field. I

found everything quite interesting, and I was changing goals one after
other. After this tenure I am been able to take decisions that what I
should do in my future or what I am capable of doing. Now I am quite
determined to select a field in which I want to proceed. And I want to
go for MS. After lot of hearing from supervisors and what engineers
were discussing their, I come to point that yes I should go for MS and I
develop my interest in it.

After this tenure of six week I can actually say this now yes Im quite
confirmed about my future goals. Before this it was stuck in my mind
that what actually these things are and how they deal with it. My
experience in the industries is very good; one thing I have learnt from
field work is that you must be very cooperative with your co-worker
and labor that are working in filed in order to get desired results from
them. Attock Refinery Limited is a very big institution of our country. It needs
modernization to improve its quality and increase production rate.

8 Problem faced and Solution

In every firm/company you faced lot of problems; you have to deal with
it. I wasnt able to apply my concepts in field because things are
always be different on large scale. With the help of my supervisor I am
been able to get over with it. It has given me real time experience of whatever I
have learnt during my engineering.

9 Summary

ARL internship program has offered me a great opportunity to grow

and develop. It has motivated me to be able to overcome challenges. I
have learnt extensively about Mechanical Engineering, the relevance of
Mechanical Engineering to real life problem. The program has
enhanced my analytical skills as well as improved my professional
ability to work in a global environment.
