VISIT TO HOSPITAL

INTRODUCTION
On 17/9/2016 we, students of Anna Adarsh paid a visit to a nearby APOLLO
hospital in Greams Lane, Off Greams Road, Chennai-06. It is a private hospital and one
of the best hospitals in the state. The first Apollo Hospital was opened in Chennai, in
1983. It was borne out of the determination to lead a complete transformation in Indian
healthcare. Apollo'sFounder Chairman, Dr. Prathap C Reddy was the driving force
behind the inception. The organisation signed a memorandum of understanding
with Health Education England in April 2016 to provide a large number of doctors to fill
vacancies in the English National Health Service

TREATMENTS
1. MINIMALLY INVASIVE CORONARY BYPASS SURGERY
Conventional CABG or Coronary Bypass surgery is performed by splitting or cutting
through the breastbone or sternum. MICAS or MICS CABG is a safe and complete
operation that has revolutionized the way coronary surgery is performed. Apollo
Hospitals has successfully completed 400 and more such surgeries.
MICS CABG or MICAS stands for minimally invasive coronary artery surgery. It is a
relatively new and advanced technique of performing coronary bypass for coronary
artery disease. In this technique the heart is approached through the side of the left
chest via a small 4cm incision. Similar to a regular heart surgery the operation is
performed using all arteries or a combination of arteries and veins removed from the
leg. The vessel from the leg in these operations is also removed endoscopically without
cutting the skin over the leg. Highly advanced instrumentation and advanced
techniques allow for the operation to be performed very safely.

2. BEATING HEART SURGERY

Coronary Bypass Surgeries are performed using contemporary techniques including the
off-pump bypass. Over 99.6% of the surgeries are "off-pump" or "beating heart"
surgeries. During off-pump or beating heart surgery, the heart-lung machine is not
used. The surgeon uses advanced operating equipment to stabilize (hold) portions of
the heart and bypass the blocked artery in a highly controlled operative environment.

Meanwhile, the rest of the heart keeps pumping and circulating blood to the body. This
offers patients faster post-operative recovery and extracts less of a toll on their
systems.

3. TRANSPLANT
Apollo Hospitals performed the first heart transplantation in 1995. This patient
went on to survive for 14 years (the longest Indian transplant survivor) until
2009 when he succumbed to an unrelated cause. In 2004, a multidisciplinary
approach to End Stage Heart Failure was envisaged and a formal Heart
Transplant Programme commenced in Apollo Hospitals. Apollo Hospitals,
Chennai has successfully performed several Heart transplants, Lung transplants,
Heart and Double Lung transplants and Heart Lung and Kidney transplantations.

4. EMERGENCY CARDIAC SURGERY

Surgeries for treatment of complications caused by the dilatation of the aorta
(aortic aneurysm), problems caused by irregular heart beat (arrhythmias - such
as atrial fibrillation), heart failure, Marfan syndrome - a genetic disorder that
causes cardiovascular abnormalities and other less common conditions are
performed extensively.

5. ROBOTIC SURGERY
Robotic or Robot-assisted surgery integrates advanced computer technology
with the experience of the skilled surgeons. This technology provides the
surgeon with a 10x magnified, high-definition, 3D-image of the body's intricate
anatomy.
The surgeon uses controls in the console to manipulate special surgical
instruments that are smaller, as well as more flexible and manoeuvrable than
the human hand. The robot replicates the surgeon's hand movements, while
minimizing hand tremors. The surgeon thus can operate with enhanced
precision, dexterity and control even during the most complex procedures.

EQUIPMENTS
1. G SCAN
Paving the way towards addressing the ever evolving and complex
healthcare environment in India, Apollo Hospitals has installed a first-of-itskind cutting edge technology G (Gravity) Scan - an open standing MRI
scanner.
The open standing MRI Machine would be also be a critical diagnostic tool for
patients who continue to experience pain after spine surgery because it can
evaluate the role and effect of patients' weight on the curvature of spine,
which cannot be accurately analyzed with conventional MRI Machines. Such
patients can now hope to get proper and accurate spine surgery done, as
with this scan the surgeons would have an exact idea and better analysis of
the extent and nature of injury, visualized along with the effect of
gravitational forces.

2. 320 SLICE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

The 320 Slice CT Scan system is an advanced imaging system that scans
your body from head to toe, in less than one minute. It helps to accurately
identify any abnormality. The system uses X Rays to obtain cross-sectional
images or slices of the targeted area. The computer system reconstructs
multiple two dimensional and three dimensional images which provide an
accurate picture of the targeted area. The 320 Slice CT Scan system also has
special applications that are invaluable in disorders of the Heart and the
Brain.

3.TRUEBEAM STX
TrueBeam STX treats cancer anywhere in the body where radiation
treatment is indicated, including cancers of the lung, breast, prostate and head
and neck. With a track record of technology upgrades, Apollo Specialty Hospitals
has adopted TrueBeam STX to help advance the way cancer is treated.
TrueBeam STX system offers doctors, a non-invasive alternative to traditional
surgery. Cancer specialists at Apollo Hospitals can use the Most Advanced
TrueBeam STX system which is the fastest in treatment speed, precision and
simplicity to accurately target tumors of the brain, spine, lung and other areas
that are typically difficult to treat surgically

FACILITIES
1. EMERGENCY CARE AND AIR AMBULANCE SERVICES
Apollo Hospitals is a pioneer of modern day emergency care in India. It set
up the 'National Network of Emergency Services' to provide emergency care of
uniform quality standards across the country. Its 24-hour emergency and trauma
care is geared to meet all medical and surgical emergencies, including
polytrauma.
AIR AMBULANCES: Air Ambulance Services are used when ground transport
could endanger a patient's life. They are also indispensable when the patient is
in a remote area and time is critical.
Apollo is equipping each of its hospitals with emergency air ambulance services.
Both fixed wing aircrafts and helicopters provide the services. Aviation
companies take care of the aviation logistics. Medical aspects like trained
personnel, equipment and care are provided by the 1066 emergency services.
Apollo's Air Ambulance services conquer time and distance in emergencies and
saves lives.

2. APOLLO CRITICAL CARE EXPERTISE

Critical care or Intensive care is a crucial medical specialty caring for
patients who are critically ill. They may require support for instability
(hypertension/hypotension), airway or respiratory compromise (ventilator
support), acute renal failure, cardiac arrhythmias, or the cumulative effects of
multiple organ failure, more commonly referred to now as multiple organ
dysfunction syndrome. Patients needing intensive/invasive monitoring, such as
in the crucial hours after major surgery or patients who are considered too
unstable to transfer to a less intensively monitored unit may also be placed in
the intensive care units.
The Critical Care units at the Apollo hospitals are a combination of many
specialties and technologies, offering the possibility of survival to patients who
are acutely and critically ill. Our ICUS are designed and managed based on the
fact that methodical organisation of Critical Care services influences important
overall outcome measures such as mortality, length of stay and infection rates.
There are multidisciplinary ICUS as well as ICUS dedicated to post cardiac

surgery patients, stroke patients, post-transplant patients, as well as special

ICUs for neonates and pediatric cases.

3. Category of Rooms
Apollo Suite: Apollo suite comprises three luxuriously appointed air-

conditioned rooms, including a dining room and a waiting room. It has a patient
cot, an attendant cot, two televisions, sofa sets, two telephones, refrigerator, a
dining table, computer with internet connection, wardrobe, microwave oven and
a massage chair.
Deluxe Room: This is an individual air-conditioned room larger than a
single room. It comprises a patient cot, an attendant cot, television, telephone,
refrigerator, cupboard and sofa.

Double Sharing Room: This is an air-conditioned room with 2 beds

separated by a screen and a washroom. This has a television, telephone, and a
couch.

Special General Ward: This is a room with 3 beds and a washroom

and an attendant couch.

General ward: This is similar to a dormitory with 6 to 10 beds and a

common washroom. Every bed is provided with a cupboard, footstool, food
trolley, a screen between each bed and a washroom.

SPECIALITIES
1. STEM CELL THERAPY AND TRANSPLANTS
Stem cells from the bone marrow aspirate are currently utilised by our
cardiologists to perform Transmyocardial Revascularisation
Tranmyocardial Revascularisation [TMR], is a lesser known option for treatment of
coronary artery Among the wide range of options that are available or under
development for the treatment of coronary artery disease. In TMR, a laser is use to
drill multiple (15-40) millimeter sized channels through the myocardium in order to
increase blood flow for patients with angina who may not be good candidates for
Coronary bypass surgery. TMR is indeed unique because it also uses autologous stem
cells, to provide clinical benefit for these patients.

2. ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY [EP] STUDY

An Electrophysiologist is a trained cardiac specialist who would be
performing an EP Study. This is a specialized procedure in which one or more thin,
flexible wires, called catheters are inserted into a blood vessel (usually the groin) and

guided into the heart. Each catheter has two or more electrodes to measure the
heart's electrical signals as they travel from one chamber to another.
EP study or Electrophysiological study is mainly performed to diagnose cardiac rhythm
abnormality, to help determine the best treatment, and to pinpoint the exact site
where therapy may be useful.

3. PROTON TREATMENT CENTRE

The Proton Treatment Centre at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai will be the first
proton cancer centre in South East Asia to identify priority areas for Research &
Development and related areas and will carry out basic and applied research. It will
develop cancer control strategies which will include newer modalities of prevention,
early diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The Proton Treatment Centre will focus on
organ specific cancer management and will have a dedicated Apollo Oncology Team.
Proton Beam Therapy provides an advanced radiation treatment option for the
oncologists. The treatment provided is highly precise and the radiation is focused
directly into the tumor, without causing any harm to the adjoining tissues. Tumours in
difficult to access areas such as, in head, neck, brain, pancreas and prostate can be
targeted. Paediatric cancer patients will also benefit to a greater extent from this
technology.
