1) the moment of inertia of an aeroplane air screw is 20kgm2 and the speed of the rotation
1000rpm clockwise when view from front.the speed of flight is 200kmph.find the gyroscopic
reaction of the air screw on the aeroplane when it makes a left handed turn on path of 150 m
radius.
2) A tangent cam with a base circle dia of 50mm operates a roller follower 20mm in dia. The line
of the stroke of the follower passes through the axis of the cam. The angle between the faces of
the cam is 60 ,speed of the cam shaft 200 rpm and the lift if the follower 15 mm calculate
a) The main dimensions of the cam
b) The accelerations of the follower at
i)The beginning of lift
ii) Where the roller just touches the nose
iii)The apex of the circular nose
3) A four wheeled trolley car of total mass 2000kg running on rails of 1m gauge, rounds a curve
of 25 m radius at 40kn/hr .the track is banked at 10.the wheel have an external diameter of 0.6 m
and each pair with axle has a mass of 200kg. the radius of gyration for each pair is 250 mm.the
C.G is o.95m aboe the ground.determine the pressure on each rail allowing for centrifugal force
and gyroscopic couple actions.
4) A cam is to be designed for a knife edge follower with the following data :
(a) Cam lift = 40 mm during 60 of cam rotation with SHM
(b) Dwell for the next 45
(c) During the next 90 of cam rotation, the follower returns to its original position with
SHM
(d) Dwell during the remaining 165 .draw the profile of cam when the line of the stroke
of the follower passes through the axis of cam shaft. The radius of the base circle of
the cam is 50 mm. Determine the maximum velocity and acceleration of the follower
during its ascent and desent, if the cam rotates at 300 r.p.m.
Tutorial-II
1. An epicyclic gear train consists of a sun wheelS, a stationary internal gear E and three
identical planet wheels P carried on a star- shaped planet carrier C. The size of different
toothed wheels are such that the planet carrier C rotates at 1/5th of the speed of the
sunwheel S. The minimum number of teeth on any wheel is 16. The driving torque on the
sun wheel is 100 N-m. Determine : 1. Number of teeth on different wheels of the train,
and 2. torque necessary to keep the internal gear stationary.
2)
A pair of 20 full depth invollute spur gears
having
30
and 50 teeth respectively of module 4 mm are in mesh, the smaller gear rotates at 1000 rpm
.Determine (i) sliding velocities at engagement and disengagement of a pair of teeth (ii)contact
ratio
3) A pair of involute spur gear with 16 pressure angle and the pitch of module 6 mm in mesh.
The number of teeth on pinion is 16 and its rotational speed is 240 rpm. When the gear ratio is
1.75,find in order that the interference just avoided (i)The addendum on pinion and gear wheel
(ii)the length of path of contact (iii) the maximum velocity of sliding of teeth on either side of
pitch point
4) Fig shows, an epicyclic gear train with the following data:
A has 40 teeths external (fixed gear ) B has 80 teeths internal C-D compound wheel having 20
and 50 teeths respectively. E-F compound wheel having 20 and 40 teeths and G has 90
teeths. The arm runs at 100 rpm clockwise, Determine speed of gears C, E, B.
